Shooting percentage of the starters.

Post#1 » by RedVanVleet » Wed Dec 15, 2021 8:06 am

Not sure if you guys care too much about this, but I know some of you do. I thought Id share a bored weekday night of mine with the rest of you.

These are the analytics for jump shots only. I have to stop somewhere otherwise this will go forever. For example Pascal looks the worst here since he is strongest when he drives, and his shooting is not his biggest strength. He is by far the teams best player in the post and when he attacks, and that’s not incorporating his FT shooting either.

Also I would like to say I only included Scotties numbers just because I know people care about him. I have little interest in looking into any sort of analytics of a 20 year old who played less than 30 nba games.

CATCH AND SHOOT

PTS FGM FGA FG% 3FGM 3FGA 3FG% EFG%`

Fred VanVleet TOR 5.3 1.8 3.8 47.1 1.8 3.7 47.5 70.6
Gary Trent Jr. TOR 4.6 1.5 3.8 40.4 1.5 3.8 40.8 60.6
OG Anunoby TOR 6.4 2.1 5.1 41.6 2.1 5.1 42.1 62.3
Pascal Siakam TOR 3.8 1.4 3.8 36.9 1.0 3.1 32.7 50.0
Scottie Barnes TOR 2.5 1.0 2.5 38.5 0.5 1.6 33.3 49.2

OFF DRIBBLE (PULLUP)

PTS FGM FGA FG%3 FGM 3FGA 3FG% EFG%

Fred VanVleet TOR 7.2 3.0 7.4 39.8 1.3 4.1 30.6 48.3
Gary Trent Jr. TOR 7.3 3.2 7.5 42.3 1.0 2.9 33.3 48.7
OG Anunoby TOR 3.8 1.6 5.3 30.4 0.6 2.3 26.5 36.1
Pascal Siakam TOR 3.0 1.5 4.1 36.2 0.1 0.2 25.0 37.0
Scottie Barnes TOR 2.0 1.0 2.3 41.7 0.1 0.3 33.3 44.2

Key take aways

- OG is having a career year stat wise off the dribble! He is shooting 30.4% and 26.5% from 3! Yes you heard that right, a career year! He simply has that bad of a handle. Although these low percentages may surprise you, the youngin’ still doesn’t shoot to miss when he receives the pass.
- Pascal shot an amazing 34% with 2.5 FGA from 3 in 2019/2020 off the dribble. Where did that shot go? He takes only 0.2 attempts this year.
- Gary is the low key the most interesting player in Toronto. My man is 22 and when he left Portland he stole Dames confidence. He is Torontos best scorer when asked to create his own shot. Off the dribble he has proven to keep up with the best of the best of the NBA. If he learns to add a passing element to his game, it might be wise to feed Gary the rock even more.
- Im surprised Fred is shooting under 40% off the dribble inside the arch. At the beginning of the year he was absolutely money with that mid range jumper. A 30.6% 3pt shooter off the dribble vs an incredible 47.5% 3PT shooter catch and shoot is something to pay attention to. Fred is easily top 5 in the league in catch and shoot efficiency.

Also, don’t take this too seriously. You need to watch / study the games and understand the sport as much as possible. Every game is a learning curve for all of us. After all, In his first year, Matt Thomas shot 48.1% catch and shoot from 3 with 1.9 attempts per game!!!! Crazy!!! And my dude can’t even make an NBA roster!

when the columns don't line up straight beneath the headings, it's a mess to read

edit - and sorry, no offense, you did do a lot of work
There goes my hero. Watch him as he goes.

Yeah Siakam was just incredible shooting threes off the dribble at one point. Now he’s barely shooting 3’s at all, which is what we wanted because he couldn’t hit the ocean ever since COVID. I still miss that player though.

There are only 2 teams in the league that rank in the top 6 in offensive and defensive efficiency: the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors.

Thanks for these stats, I actually have to say that my eye test said that Scottie was doing better in this regard, especially of late, but I guess not.

This further confirms that Fred is so much more effective off ball. If only we had another true ball handler to let him play to his true strengths

Ball movement would also help with that too but I’ve lost hope for that

To have better ball movement, we will need more sharp shooters for defenders to follow closely, or we have someone who can demand double team.
