This Covid outbreak feels as bad or worse as anything the league has at any point in the pandemic so far. It's just nonstop everyday with someone new entering the protocols.

Oh man, he's stuffed. They are going the hail mary options. Low dose ultrasound is another thing we may see soon, if they haven't already been doing it. But most of that is to help stress fractures.
The interesting thing about Zion being overweight is that it may not be his weight that's affecting his healing, but that his body has a general level of increased inflammation that doesn't give the best environment for recovery. Smoking, hyperthyroidism, diabetes and so on have a similar affect. Suspect there's some more interesting research in this area to come.

It sucks we weren't able to see more of Zion but unfortunately that body just can't hold up long term, dude was already the heaviest player in the league at just 6'6" so it's not surprising an injury caused him to bloat up over 300lbs causing even problems. Maybe he should try being a TE or D-lineman a try. Not sure it's even possible for him to get down to like 265.

Re: ATL - Isaiah Stewart 2, LBJ 1
So what does a pause in the season accomplish? It obviously allows the players who are currently positive to receive negative tests and be ready to play again. But during/after the pause, those who aren't currently positive could become positive. Seems to me what needs to change are the protocols, e.g., no indoor gatherings, intense contact tracing, boosters for everybody during the pause etc.
Pause + protocol revisions seems to be logical but would think the players association would need to agree to more restrictive protocols and we know how that goes.

It allows the NBA to revisit and modify their protocols.

Then that makes sense. Players Association would have to agree I'd assume? And if they don't...?

Sixers are floundering. Look for them to move Simmons in the next couple of weeks.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Just seeing that he's taking an injection to the foot brings up big "Breaks of the Game" vibes to me. I think Zion is going to end up being an Amare-like figure. Hell, he might even become an all-star again, but the jaw-dropping phase is done.

Yup when I first saw him at the HS AA game and realized he's from SC I immediately thought holy hell think if he'd gone to Clemson and played DE. Probably a #1 overall pick or top 10 that route too.

The dumbest thing about the Skip / KD beef is that Skip would have been able to see Patty Mills in that game but still tweeted that out.

It would be funny if the season standings ended like this. I'd love to see the Nets dealing with Trae Young in first round, I'm not sure they can. Hawks had a rough start but it's one of those teams that can blow up any time without a warning, including in the POs.

That was my first thought also. What is your take on Stem cell injections or platelet spinning? Sounds like he's doing one or the other of the two.

That clip of Walton was fantastic. He's pretty stoned or on a trip for the entire interview.
Always relay this story of meeting him at the Hyatt when he played for the Clippers. He was a really cool guy, very nice. But he could have cared less about playing hoops. His focus for the trip to Milwaukee was getting over to Radio Doctors to buy a handful of rare Grateful Dead albums that he had with him.
Those ten minutes with him always stuck with me, when years later he'd be the color guy always admonishing other NBA players for not being committed enough to their craft. "You know Marv, It makes no sense to me when a guy like Stevie Francis doesn't maximize his gifts".
Bill, you didn't give a **** either, and only really focused that one year with Portland and the one year with the Celtics.

Playing for the Clips in the early 80s would stress commitment, but perhaps you should take these Westwoodian words to heart: "do not mistake activity for achievement." Basketball is not only played on the court; the real battle is within the mind.
I've made no secret of my love for Walton. He's an interesting case. He went from free spirit to broadcast scold back to free spirit and booster of both corporations and causes.
I think I've referenced this interview with Simmons before (relevant part begins around 10:00) in which Walton talks about the joy of play, with 'play' extending beyond basketball. Total immersive joyless drive leaves you with monomaniacal machines like Kobe. The real import of Bird and Magic, who I think have been clearly eclipsed in the last quarter century, is the joy and selflessness they brought. Where they fit in rankings is beside the point.

Just buy a few weeks until we hopefully get more substantial data about omicron causing much less severe illness, even in unvaccinated people. That data is needed to evaluate any potential new protocols. I prefer to err on the side of caution, but the debate is very different if some of the reports about omicron are true. A very optimistic view, with a month or more of data backing it up, might even allow asymptomatic players to play eventually if omicron replaces delta. We're far from having enough data to expect that, but there might be enough to at least hope for it.
