I watched WWE as a kid, everyone knows (or at least most do) that it's fake and scripted but they watch for the drama. The same applies to these fights. And the novelty of celebrities fighting each other has it's appeal too.
I do think these events outdrawing real boxing matches is bad for the sport though. It's like when counterfeited goods outsell the real thing.
It really just goes to show the majority watch Boxing for the spectacle and not the sport.
On the WWE note, these are the same people that give PPV buys to WWE for Brock Lesnar and Bill Goldberg. People want names they know and wouldn't know the difference between a great match and a mediocre one.
