Now, many countries are taking steps out of fear and or extra caution, but hopefully as more data comes in the result is that it's a milder strain which would be very good for everyone. How that affects the NBA'S decisions, I don't know. Infection rate is not the only important parameter, but it is a large factor.

Here is a useful interview to get a breakdown of the situation:

It's indeed a milder string, but it's 4 times more transmissible than Delta, which presents a moral question I wouldn't want to dive into.

let vaccinated asymptomatic players play, announce test results before the games, allow players who do not want to play with/against someone who tested positive stay home and get paid for the game. keeps the season going, keeps as many players on the court as possible, and guys don't feel as financially pressured to play against infected people if they don't want to

Fans in the stands plus TV money are the most important thing, so I can't see them cutting games and leaving certain records for where each team might land upon after the final game at the end of April. However, by adding an extra month it would mean the finals would be played in July, which might hit the ratings as more people will be on vacation and stuff. Al in all, it's probably going to be another financial loss. (I say this, but each individual NBA team franchise worth has gone up from the previous year, so there's that as well, but it can't be good for ESPN or TNT.)

If that happens hopefully next season they start it a month later so the teams in the Finals don’t have such a disadvantage in terms of an offseason again.

The NFL is in playoff mode it makes sense that they will focus on the most important COVID cases. The NBA is just ramping up their biggest viewed section in the RS. Very critical moment for ad money if they decide to shut down. Utah/Phoenix/GS/Dallas are good to go. If they can salvage some of these teams they can continue the product.

Poll added, inspired by Freighttrain's thread from little earlier.
If I'm missing an obvious option let me know before too many people vote.

If it turns into the product that the magic/nets put out last night, I want a refund on my league pass

Yea, what the data is trying to determine is whether it's low virulence surpasses it's high transmitability in populations where the majority have either experienced infection or have been vaccinated. South Africa's results so far are suggesting a 90% decrease in hospitalization and 2/3 in deaths (30 times reduction vs Delta, etc) and rates that are putting it at the same level as common respiratory illnesses. So 4 times as many infections with 30 times fewer deaths (if that holds in other countries) is a win for preservation of life and reduction of strain on health systems.

Part of what is hypothesized as contributing to both the high spread and lower virulence is that the strain might not spread well in the lungs and spreads better in the upper respiratory tract.

What that means for the NBA, I have no clue, but what that means for countries and communities could be a very good thing if it holds true. We basically have to wait and see though.

I voted for other. Can't really go into detail on it as it would probably go against the OP.

Finally the NBA is doing the logical thing just delay some games, nobody wants to see the NBA with 90 percent of it not being able to play

Well its not fair for the teams who have traveled all the way back from the far west to east like Denver , and they are postponing the game now , even though the Nets played the game last night and had enough players, unless those players were affected too after the game with Orlando , it seems to me the that the Nets thought they could win against Orlando without their best players, so they pick and choose which one they would delay , which is a bs move.

I'm getting a feeling the league just wants this to burn it's way through the league and hope some kind of natural immunity keeps the playoffs from being an absolute dumpster fire.

Stop testing vaxxed & asymptomatic players.

Extend the regular season to make up games as well.

Both teams have had covid cases seemingly every day....Can almost guarantee you another Knicks player tests positive and wouldn't be surprised to see an outbreak within the Warriors since Poole tested positive and then they played Boston.

Behind the scenes(and the conspiracy theorist in me) I wonder are the league’s tv partners having discussions with the league and teams about the Christmas games. The Christmas games are a really big deal for ESPN/ABC and if you have games with no stars you’re going to have disastrous ratings. This is the same network that basically had all its on air staff say that the ‘20 season should continue no matter what. So I’m sure they would prefer the league cancel any games this week as long as they get to the 25th
