The Dolans are not cheap, they work with what they got. Cleveland is just a bad market for this baseball team. Low fan turn out will continue to be the down fall of this team. You want the dolans to spend? **** show up to the games.

Umm who the hell do you think you are? I vowed to never spend another dime on the team after they dismantled 07 team by giving away 2 future Cy Young winners. Why should I support an owner that can't financial support the team in a positive way and is net negative in almost every conceivable way. But way would you care your probably a Dolan. The city will rejoice when this nickle and diming cheaper are gone.

I think that's the point, it doesn't really evoke anything when you think of Guardians, it's a really bland name. Better than Redskins by virtue of not being a slur.

Cleveland doesn't deserve this team? Ummm, learn some history. The city sold out 455 straight games when they had an ownership group that spent the money to actually compete. The Dolans spent $360 mil on the team which left them cash poor as far as a pro sports ownership group is concerned, the team has more than doubled in value since and they continually cry about attendance after trading two consecutive Cy Young award winners and then cry to the media that they "will spend more when more people come to the games". Speaking out of both sides of their mouth, blaming the fans for their own shortcomings and then selling off their best players before having to actually pay them market value. I have said for years that the team will never win it all with the Dolans as owners. Are there worse owners out there? Sure, but saying the city doesn't deserve the team is an ignorant statement.

LivingLegend wrote:Welp. Tell me something good Philly fans. Apparently the minority owner of the 76ers David Blitzer just purchased 35% of the Cleveland Guardians (Indians) from the Dolans. There are also plans on him eventually taking over as the majority owner when Paul Dolan sells the rest of his shares in a few years.

Apparently, Blitzer also owns partial share of the NJ Devils so he is really cornering the market here by being part-owner of 3 different sports teams.

Does anybody have any info on this guy? Cleveland fans have been begging the Dolans to sell forever now because they are the cheapest ownership group ever. It would be amazing to get a owner who is not afraid of spending and retaining good players. Im sick of losing all of our good players to NY and LA because we dont want to spend money.

https://www.cleveland.com/guardians/2021/12/david-blitzer-reportedly-close-to-purchasing-a-share-of-the-cleveland-guardians.html

David Blitzer is a controversial figure because he is a major player for the Blackstone Group, a group that is highly involved in, among other things, massive real estate/land acquisition with the intent of controlling markets and maximizing profit in lieu of most other considerations. In the coming years, if the housing market continues to price out America's middle class across the country, Blackstone will be a name at the front of the line for conspiracy theories and all-around general hatred.

In other words, to put it simply, he has access to a mountain of cash. Like Trump, he is a graduate of Univ. of Penn's Wharton School of Economics. His grades were considerably better (Trump = B student, Blitzer = top of the class).

Guardians is a horrible name, you are correct. A lot of the Indian nations actually support these team names. The Seminole tribe in FL, for instance, is a staunch supporter of the 'Seminoles' name for FSU.

"Seminoles" is very different from "Indians".

One pays homage to a local Indigenous people. The other is a racist misnomer.

I thought this was the name of their local news paper or something. The Cleveland Guardian.

I view it the other way around. You want fans to show up--spend some ******* money and keep players here. I don't want to hear about the financial hardships of a billionaire.

Fans are burnt out from having every good player that comes through this organization be pilfered away to the highest bidder before their contract is even up. Fans can't get attached to anybody because they know they are gone 1 year before having to pay them.

Lindor even talked about it in a interview he let slip something like "players know in the clubhouse that their second contract isn't going to come from Cleveland and you have to leave to get paid"

Shame.

Uh, okay? Actually Utah Jazz is a great name because we stole (bought) it from New Orleans. Guess the Lakers name sucks too huh.

Is this everyone’s go to is to bash someone’s team? Weak argument troll.

I think it's more to do with the fact that the Seminole tribe actually works with Florida State university in not only educating the student and local population about the tribe, but also it's history in the region. They also take part in football traditions such as a Seminole member riding on a horse to light the flame during college football games.

The Indians had that caricature of chief Wahoo going around for years. Honestly they were better off renaming the team the spiders as they were once known as that prior to being renamed the Indians because of a player that actually was Native American.

In the end, they just changed it to avoid problems as saw by the Washington(name redacted) football team. It's an age old adage of removing the native and keeping the land.

As for the 76ers minority owner, I can't say if that's a good thing. Looking at the way they turned the New Jersey Devils from a proud franchise that won 3 Stanley Cups and made numerous playoff runs from 87-2012 into a laughingstock, brace yourselves.

Cleveland Spiders sounds pretty cool. Better than Guardians at least.

I feel like everybody says stuff like this when a new team gets named but then after a few years it becomes normal.

Remember when the OKC Thunder got announced? I couldnt think of a cornier sounding team name, but now it just seems normal and a solid name.

However, people are having more difficulty with the Indians team name because of how historical the name is.

No no no no. There are many that think that and I have no idea how. The Cleveland Spiders sound like a default name you are given when you fire up Madden Create-A-Team mode.

Guardians is a good name, its just going to take 3-5 years for people to get adjusted and move on mentally from Indians.

People are having difficulty with it because they want to change the name but it’s the same name with a few letters rearranged lol. Just go with the Spiders.

Guardians is just a knock off Indians name. Yes yes yes yes. And you know why people think that? Because it’s better than some cheap knock off name.

Tribe woudl have been a knock off Indians name (which is what I wanted) but apparently they wanted to completely distance themselves from the native american theme.

Honestly, since Cleveland is on a Great Lake, Im surprised they didnt go with a Maritime themed name like Captains, Breakers, Admirals, ect

I'll add another factor as to why Blackstone is a dangerous group. These dudes pioneered and innovated mortgage backed securities which ultimately led to the great recession that we saw in 2008. For those who don't know what an MBS is it's basically using your home as collateral to finance debt. A lot of people got railroaded badly because of it and lost their homes. Quite frankly that tool put a lot of people into the poorhouse and ruined millions of lives in the process.

Another factor that not too many people know about is that the only reason Lehman brothers was allowed to fail while other major banks were bailed out was because Blackstone had a stake in all the other companies while having none in Lehman bros. George W. Bush gave Blackstone full autonomy in deciding who got bailed out and who didn't and we're seeing it again during the pandemic as they are becoming the biggest landlords of real estate in America.

If your a couple or a single person trying to get a home, you'll be outbid by these hedge funds that include one of the Koch brothers who have been lobbying in favour of these hedge funds being allowed to buy up entire subdivisions and apartments and renting them out to people. It's a scary thought how far these guys have come and they own a significant stake in numerous companies whether they be domestic or international. Even if it's a private or state owned enterprise they have a stake in it too.
