Re: ATL - Isaiah Stewart 2, LBJ 1
The whole in season tournament thing, I don't get it from a fan perspective. Winning team players will get a big bonus, maybe $1 million each. So what? Give the winning team a first round bye or something like that and it may be worth watching. Or the winning team gets a lottery pick. I understand December is a dead time in the NBA but this is too gimmicky.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Winning Team Lotto pick sounds fun.

Winning team clinches a playoff spot seems the obvious team prize.

Re: ATL - Isaiah Stewart 2, LBJ 1
Over half the teams already make the playoffs. Who's going to care about a tournament where only the crappy teams have incentive? And yes, a million $$$ might motivate players from all teams but why would Bucks fans (or fans of any of the top teams) care?emunney wrote:Winning team clinches a playoff spot seems the obvious team prize.

I don't get why just winning a cup competition like in a lot of different European sports is a bad thing. Yes at first players and fans won't care that much about it but eventually people will talk about it.

It should be both the players get money and the team get an extra 1st round pick or something.
still learning the game

Team that wins receives a Get Out of Jail Free card (amnesty clause) which they can use or trade if they want. That'd be a pretty huge asset. Lakers and Rockets would be gunning hard for the win

This "in season tournament thing" is a crappy name, you need a glamorous name that will get some attention, like Copa Del Rey, which means The King's Cup. You need to get some Kings and Queens in the US, they come in handy for naming stuff. Like you got to admit "I studied at the The Royal Academy of XYZ" has a great ring to it. They'll figure something out, America can sell ice cubes to penguins.

It depends how they do it but I'm interested. It's hard for me to imagine caring less about the 82 game regular season so anything they do that eliminates meaningless games intrigues me.

This is my thought. Maybe nobody cares to start but the hope is as time goes on rivalries and memories are made so that the tournament means something.
Hell, name the trophy after Kobe or something and I'd think the players would care.

Might as well just have 4 - 20 game mini-tournaments to determine playoffs seeds.

If the Boston Celtics or the Chicago Bulls win that tournament because they care and then gloat on social media and in talk shows top teams will start to care. And it gives good but not great teams something to play for.

Τhe important european domestic cups have histories dating back more than an average lifetime, and due to the single elimination/double game formats they give a chance of distinction to squads that have no shot to a title in a 30+ game season. None remembers any of the 31 Copa Del Reys of Barcelona, but I have a friend from Andalucia who never forgets to mention the single win of Betis during his lifetime

Re: ATL - Isaiah Stewart 2, LBJ 1
Players will only "care" if they can win a lot of cash. I don't blame them, I would be the same way. They don't care about a trophy or "bragging rights" or an extra pick or any of that. I get that in the U.S. December is the deadzone of the NBA. All sports eyes are focused on football. Silver wants some of those eyes on the NBA.
The best thing for the NBA is a shorter season, starting on Xmas day, ending when it usually ends in April. Make regular season games mean more. That will never happen but that's 1000X better than a sham tournament.

Adam Silver is listening to the wrong crowd, in terms of growing the sport while maintaining a widespread american audience.

I will never forgot when my local team took Bayern Munich to penalties in one of the earlier cup rounds nearly twenty years ago. I know

It's very close. Freak playing the lead rim protector with Lopez out is basically leading the league in rim protection. Its something like opposing players shooting ~45% at the rim with Gianni as primary defender.blazza18 wrote:Draymond should be the clubhouse leader at this point but the DPOY race between him and Giannis should be a doozy the rest of the way.

Re: ATL - Isaiah Stewart 2, LBJ 1
To me, the tournament idea just seems like a cheap ratings ploy from Silver. 82 games plus a long playoff run isn’t enough time for the league to maximize profits apparently.

Instead of an in season tournament, I would rather see some of the bottom teams that didn't make the playoffs play some Euro teams in a tournament. I read often how those teams say they could beat NBA teams and I would like to see those matchups
