I’m all for trading Pat Williams if the right deal comes along. We likely have a 3-4 year window right now. If he can help land a legit starting PF then that’s what we need. We just don’t know what he can develop to be next season or later for now. Which sucks.

Would be nice to get an update on his rehab. 5 games into this season we all were hoping Bulls would be good enough to get a few games over .500 by end of year. Pats impact in those games means nothing yo me.

This teams style of play is infectious. If Pat has a bad motor on this current team, he won’t play. I feel he would be great with Caruso and Ball jumping passing lanes and getting on the break. J Green doesn’t jump off the page in the half court so I feel confident that Pat can do what Javonte could and more.

If Pat comes back in March and can get 10 games in, we can use him in playoffs.

He's def going to be playing in March. I think he'll get the cast off in about 6 weeks and from that point it's just a matter of getting back ROM and strength, which shouldn't take longer than another 4 weeks. So 10 weeks from today sounds about right. Mid March return where he can get some games under his belt and get some conditioning before the playoffs.

I'll go ahead and make a sig bet that Mikal is better by RPM this year than Zach.

DISABLED PLAYER EXCEPTION -- This exception allows a team which is over the cap to replace a disabled player who will be out for the remainder of that season (it can also be granted in the event of a player's death). This exception is granted by the league, based on an application from the team and a determination by an NBA-designated physician or Fitness to Play panel (see question number 62) that the player is substantially more likely than not to be unable to play through the following June 15.

I guess the league feels he's at least 33% likely to be able to play at some point this season.

This says a lot about how the Bulls FO views Pat this season. They either think he won't return, or he'll be so ineffective that a DPE is the better option.

I don't think it says anything about how they feel about Pat. If approved you're given another roster spot and money to make moves. If Pat comes back before the season ends, then that's just a bonus.

So you can use the DPE AND get the player back who you were granted a DPE because of?

Bulls FO wants that exception obviously it's an asset. However the NBA denying them only means that they believe Patrick Williams is more likely than not going to return this season. If they didn't believe that, they would have granted the Bulls this exception.

More here...guess it's good news that league thinks he'll be back.

Pat's cast should be coming off soon if it hasn't already. I don't see a scenario in which he is out another 4 months. I'm thinking 2 months to get some feel back with shooting, dribbling, conditioning.

I hope that the optimistic return take - that underlies the league's decision and that some on this forum have - ends up being correct.

Very much so.

I am still a big believe in Pat (not as some sort of future superstar, but as an almost perfect fit roleplayer for what the Bulls are trying to do at the 4 and a guy who has enough talent to be a very good and valuable "supporting" player in the league for a long, long time).

Too include, hopefully, some positive impact this year in the playoffs.

Asking for the DPE should tell you people that SO want to trade him that that is not part of the Bulls' plan.

I don't know what the timing of asking for that exemption is, if they could have they should have asked as soon as he was injured when there was less known about the severity of the injury and maybe they qualify for the exemption. That would have given the Bulls an earlier chance to bring in some PF help. If this is the first chance they had to ask for it then it's just procedure whether they think he'll be back by June or not.

The fact that they're asking could signal they have someone in mind to bring in that fits the rules of an expiring salary of a matching amount. I think fitting someone into their TPE is the most likely move, not trading White or Williams

Wake me up when the cast is off. It’s not yet either. Saw a IG story with him rebounding one handed with cast still on.

I'd be fine with a fully rested and rehabbed Pat Williams getting unleashed right before the playoffs.....

anything we get from him would be a bonus. this was a huge draft pick.
If not for our FA signings this summer, he'd be our biggest hope.....

I’m not 100% sure on the timing but I thought they did ask immediately for the exception and the league just ruled on it now.

Yeah, on the surface, I get what you're saying. That said, some of the return times from this sorta surgery floating around say 6-9 months, and since it involves ligaments and not just bone, I'm not sure about how long he has to wait before he can risk rehab (ie lifting) and contact.

After seeing the definition, no duh.

DISABLED PLAYER EXCEPTION -- This exception allows a team which is over the cap to replace a disabled player who will be out for the remainder of that season (it can also be granted in the event of a player's death). They have to think he is substantially more likely than not to be out all the way through the NBA finals. His timeline based on reports is March 1-May 1 and even the pessimistic case has him back well before June 15.
