The NBA currently has 36 percent of its referees in COVID-19 protocols.

With 25 of the league's 70 active referees currently in quarantine, the league has been promoting G League referees to fill out the nightly roster of games.

The G League has paused the season until Wednesday to allow for players and referees to be available to the NBA.

NBA referees are 100 percent vaccinated and are required to be fully boosted by Wednesday.

NCAA rules I think is 8 players and 1 coach. Is there a similar requirement to a 'coach' for the NBA? If all coaches/assistants are COVID protocol can anyone in the organization be allowed to coach that game?

Over 1/3 of NBA refs are currently in Covid protocols

At this rate, are we gonna have replacement refs or are refs going to be reffing b2b2b games?

Hmmm, they should call up Rasheed Wallace, Karl Malone, Gary Payton, Dennis Rodman, Anthony Mason and Kevin Garnett to ref, judging by their vast amount of experience with arguing with the refs they seem like the kind of guys that would know exactly how to ref already.

Why won't the NBA pause the season?

Post#687 » by uberhikari » Fri Dec 31, 2021 12:59 am

The covid cases in the US are completely out of control. The 7-day average for covid cases in the US is now above 300,000. Within the last week, we've had a day with 500,000+ cases and another with 489,000+ cases. The numbers are getting so large it doesn't seem real.

Meanwhile, NBA rosters are completely decimated. Even 36% of the referees are in covid protocols. So, why won't the NBA pause the season?

The rules are the same for every team. If you have 8 healthy players you play, if you don't you don't. If a team doesn't want to play, all they have to do is stay under 8 available players.

So... don't sign enough hardship guys in time. Or say someone sprained his ankle or has back spasms and you only have 7 available players. Boom, you don't have to play. There are many simple ways for teams to control their own destiny here if they so choose.

And imo it's not some awesome gift to get a game postponed anyway. The game still has to be played and there's no guarantee that a team will want to play it when it's rescheduled any more than they want to play it now. If anything teams are probably thinking they don't want a bunch of extra games in the last couple weeks of the RS when they are trying to be rested and healthy for the playoffs. Not to mention there could very well be a new COVID variant hitting the league at the end of the season.

do you think the numbers will improve if they stop the season? when will the season start again?

as long as they are all vaccinated, this is just something they will have to push through.

Just a wild guess, but maybe people are sick and tired of work stoppages?

Players, Coaches, and Staff want to get paid. Vendors don't want to give refunds.

There's a lot of money to lose from a lot of angles if the season was paused.

Pausing the season does nothing. We are almost 2 years into the pandemic with 70% of the population having gotten at least 1 job.

Death counts are falling. ICU's arent overflowing. Pause for what? The virus isnt going anywhere. Vaccines are doing their job preventing death and symptoms.

We live with the virus, just like we live with the Flu and the common cold, and have for centuries.

Pause the season and then what? When do they come back? What metrics will they use to decide on when to come back? I can't see them pausing the season, there's too much money at stake.

If deaths and hospitalizations were going up that might be something to consider. If all the new cases are the mild version, well….

Anyone who is vaccinated and asymptomatic should be able to play. The NBA needs to stop looking foolish and abusing their fans. If they want to continue with sitting players who are asymptomatic and vaccinated then refund every ticket. We aren't paying to watch g-leaguers.
