Official: [Woj] UPDATE: Rondo to Cavs, Valentine/cash to Knicks, nothing to Lakers

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Fri Dec 31, 2021 1:59 am

The Cleveland Cavaliers are nearing a trade to acquire Los Angeles Lakers guard Rajon Rondo, and an agreement is expected to be completed as soon as Friday, sources told ESPN.

The sides are working out terms on a deal, but the Cavaliers need to create a roster spot to make room for Rondo. The Cavaliers could include a minimum-contract player in the deal with Los Angeles, or waive a player and complete the trade using a second-round pick or cash...

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

They want that Playoff Rondo.

A fairly meh deal, but he's probably better than anything they could get off the scrap heap.

I wonder what the Lakers are doing though. Maybe lowering the tax bill?

Well that tells you Cavs don't want a Love for Russ deal.

Also tells you that the Cavs aren’t ready to enter the tax with this team at this time.

The Lakers need to lower their roster for Stanley Johnson and potentially other buyout or trade targets.

I don't hate this move as a stopgap, Rondo's basically a hardship player at this point.
Well at least we're not Detroit!

Is this trolling? Rubio is out for the year.

It’s an illegal deal. Neither player can be traded back to the teams that traded them away in this current season.

Did you not realize it was illegal and were suggesting it seriously, or were just trying to be funny that the Wolves get a 2nd doing the swap both ways? I definitely believe it was the second.

And if you were suggesting it seriously, do you really have the Wolves willing to go into the tax and take an injured player for that 2nd? Or again, was it a joke post that was trolling?

I will say, as much as I don't think Minnesota would do that, I think Cleveland got their 2nd worth of Rubio already in the wins he clearly helped them achieve, and they wouldn't have never done the first trade even knowing the unexpected injury that befell the player they received.

Have we found out the actual deal yet? Feels like it's taking longer than usual after Shams/Woj say it's happening.

Perhaps a filler is added.

I'm a little surprised the Lakers took back Valentine. We must've parted with something to get them to do that.

With Rubio and Sexton out for the season, and Garland out due to Covid protocols, the Cavs are clearly looking for backcourt help at this point and Prince isn't that.

updated title.

I mean for nothing its okay, but I thought part of the value of Rubio wasn't just his playmaking but his leadership. Rondo is a worse player and you know never know which Rondo will show up. He's going to a better team, but he may not see it that way going from a veteran team to a very young team.

But worth trying I guess before deciding if they need to do something more major at the deadline. But the Lakers who are desperate for guard play giving him makes me think this isn't going to work for Cleveland.
