Teams do it all the time w/ guys that they know will return, just like the Bulls did with Pat Williams over a dislocated wrist. Another reason to do it now, even if the Bucks think Lopez will be back, is if there is a setback in his rehab. You apply now and if the deny it, you can reapply when (if) the setback happens. Can't reapply after the deadline if you didn't apply prior to it.

WRau1 is correct, this is how the procedure works.

However, the Bucks won't apply for this because money spent with the DPE counts against the tax, and ownership is pinching pennies

I think that's a reach. The Disabled Player Exception is for when a player has an injury deemed to be season-ending. Because the Bucks have indicated Lopez will likely return, there's a matter of credibility if the Bucks tried to use this exception.

Indicated to whom? As far as I can tell, their official response has been "sidelined indefinitely, hopeful he can return & will give updates when applicable ".

To Zach Lowe from ESPN 3 days ago:

Zach Lowe: What I’ve heard from from inside the (Bucks) organization is they remain optimistic (Brook) Lopez is going to come back before the playoffs, maybe well before the playoffs.

Adding in the "maybe well before the playoffs" makes it obvious they expect him back this season, imo.

Possible, probable, and certain are different.
Hope and expectation are not the same thing.

The Bucks probably hope that Brooke will be back well before the playoffs. Hoping neither makes it certain, nor necessarily probable.

Meh, I wouldn't worry about any kind of credibility loss from a single report by an "insider".

Unless he's outright lying, I think the average person would conclude from that the Bucks obviously expect Lopez back for the playoffs.

Too bad we don’t know the success rate of this type of surgery, since we don’t know what he had done. Brook could be back, but who knows how effective he’ll be.

I don't really see why Lopez's status should affect our activity before the deadline. Whether or not he's ready for the postseason, the goal should be to acquire a defensive PF to spell Giannis and Bobby for a couple minutes in a potential playoff series. And no, not some 6'4, 215 lb wing who we play as a 4, an actual PF slash small-ball 5 who isn't a walking liability on both ends like Semi and Thanasis. Boogie's adequately filled the traditional Center role and I fully expect his contract to be guaranteed next week.

Just to be clear, the Bucks haven't publicly indicated to anyone on whether or not Lopez will be back. I don't see the issue here.

Honestly, spinal surgery is a bit of a dice roll at the best of times. Research tends to show early intervention has better outcomes, and I think it's always important to have the clearer timelines a surgical intervention allows.

It would be great to have some idea what's going on, as you say, as I can't really say much more as we don't know anything...

I'm curious if Mo Bamba is a good fit. If yes, would they trade for him?

Nate Wolters, another in a long line of "We hope this second round guy turns out to not be forgettable" players. We still haven't gotten over some old habits, it seems.
