SPURS GAME DAY! GAME 36: SPURS AT PISTONS, 1-1-2022, 6PM (CT)

Post#1 » by G R E Y » Sat Jan 1, 2022 8:32 pm

A SEGABABA made all the harder with the team now dealing with a depleted line-up, but as ever, it's next man up mentality. Just about every team is dealing with it, so we have to rally around one another, stay true to our fundamentals, and core strengths - team ball, two-way play, ball protection, and pace. Impose these from the start for the right finish.

A bit messy with the TOs early... No need to try to thread the needle with bad contested passes inside to Jakob. We can get the ball to him. Movement. Patience.

Good D switches and contests, but once again we are getting killed on the boards with these tippy tap outs for 50/50 balls rather than boxing out and grabbing the ball. And once again we are paying for it.

Our small guards keep getting mismatched versus bigger forwards and once again we are paying for it.

And can we please finish strong at the rim? Jakob had a two hander and didn't dunk it... It's not that complicated. Stick to fundamentals.

Pistons commentators are bigger homers than Spurs ones. You'd think they were 28-5 not the other way around.

1ST Q: SPURS 29

PISTONS 20

It would have been 29-18 but Jock absolutely fell asleep boxing out nobody as they got an easy sneak behind him O board putback. FUNDAMENTALS, GENTS!

I think we're too tentative at their rim, and our own for that matter.

We're doing a great job getting to the FT line, making 9-11. We have to be careful about their 3s, they've only made 2, but have taken 11 so clearly trying to bomb their way from the arc is a strategy. Also a way to conserve energy, I guess.

Bryn is scoring well, which is what we need him to do.

We have to pass inside to Jakob better, and he has to seal his man and raise his hand to give a target better, too.

Just more assertiveness and crispness needed from and by us, better focus. We're too tentative and giving momentum plays away to a team that has nothing to lose. We better get our intensity and sense of urgency up another level.

Jakob just isn't very good at holding onto the basketball, is he?

Pop brings out the TWO BIGS line-up - Jakob and Jock in together! And what do you know, a balanced lineup with Derrick, Devin, and Tre and we're cooking on both ends. Very good D and O balance as well as bigs and Fs, Gs, so that they can't mismatch as well. Good transition points by us as well.

WOW Pop just ripped into Jakob for being so late and lax in coming up to set the screen for Derrick. WAKE UP, man!

Just such inconsistent, dumb plays. We get up 15 so of course proceed to stop thinking and hustling and give up a 7-2 run and force Pop to call a timeout.

Is setting screens and not driving into multiple defenders rather than making the extra pass THAT hard? It's just **** BASIC basketball...

Primo's got tunnel vision with his outside shot right now. It's not falling young man, need to drive or move the ball better.

Blaha and Kelser are two of the worst homers in the league. At least they aren't rude and disrespectful like LAC's or GSW's though.....

Wait for it..... Detroit is currently down 17. If they score 2 baskets and Pop calls timeout they will scream "DONT LOOK NOW FOLKS! WE ARE ONLY DOWN 13!!!"

EDIT:Ahh Blaha is off tonight so its not nearly as homer as it usually is.....

2ND Q: SPURS 59

PISTONS 52

We just allowed a 32-point Q to one of the most depleted teams in the league, this on O boards and physical drives. They went on a 22-12 run to close the half and that's **** inexcusable.

So is Jakob not finishing using the glass ro dunking but tippy tapping the ball on O boards. Jock uses two hands to GRAB the ball - so it IS possible!

Keldon has had a second consecutive game where he looks a shell of himself. He isn't using the glass, opting instead to try to guide the ball in and miss, he's driving into congested keys looking for the call rather than looking to finish well and he's not only missing but not getting calls. He's looking to get bailed out when he's not scoring, and he keeps shooting rather contributing in other ways like PASSING the ball to others. Can't have him missing AND stopping the ball. Someone get in his ear about it.

We are getting outrebounded again, 26-22, including 8-5 on O boards.

Devin is playing well, so too is Derrick.

Primo has to get his trigger happy distance in check. Drive, young man.

I like our help D at the baseline, but others have to remember to rotate to the cutters.

Pop ran a tight eight-man unit (plus four minutes for Joe) and I think Thad would be helpful here as we're getting bodied down low again.

We better make sure we're a lot more physical and aggressive and focused in the second half.

 Yeah I was going to ask you about that half time show -- lolwut?! The babies race at AT&T Center was more entertaining. Just so weird, man...

Anyway, it's just when Bryn is so patently stupid with BASIC defensive plays that I get triggered. Like at least TRY to contest the shooter. If even I see it, imagine what the coaches and teammates must be feeling. He has to be shooting 100% to MAYBE justify such mind numbing lapses.

Yeah I'm just sick of his stupid D is all

When the team was in Auburn Hills they used to get big name halftime entertainment. Not that it matters, but IDK what they are thinking now. Maybe because there are only 15 people in the stands at games now they are going cheap
