I would've preferred they did this last offseason, but they didn't, but next off season they can do trade or S&T for another player.

They have to do that moves but... Are you sure they want to do it? Maybe the 4th year is the good one

I'm really starting to worry Cuban isn't willing to spend, so yeah, I'm not really sure.
This will mean 160 million payroll for 2 years until KP comes off the books, not really small amount of money.

Yes but the Mavs payroll is atrocious... Next year it will be one of the most high but this will be a no where team unless they will make the right moves.

Well, apart from UTA and PHX being basically at full strength, all of those games were winnable. Bucks, Twolves and Kings losses specially hurt a lot. Mavs are 17-18 now holding the 8th spot. I know teams are still close but it's going to be hard to climb back to that 5th spot. We're slowly getting to the point where you simply can't afford to lose games that you shouldn't lose.

To be honest Luka has missed 14 of last 22 games, so we have more or less only begging of the season to make some conclusions. The begging in which Luka came unprepared and Kidd didn't exactly help him looking good with his dubious rotations.

The problem I see is, that even if Luka is playing like the best player in the world, last playoffs, Mavs are not winning anything with that roster. Brunson won't change that.

If you give keys to Luka, Brunson is not worth what he will probably get next season. Especially knowing that Luka and Brunson together in closing games are big liability in D. And we still don't know how Brunson will look in playoffs.

If Brunson was under long term contract, his good games would have been great for Mavs. But in this case and Cuban&Co. being clueless mostly, it can be disastrous for Mavs.

I suspect Brunson will be ok in the playoffs. He is playing much better in the RS this year and he will probably be ok in the PO as well. But we are talking about the RS here now. You are jumping ahead.

I agree that this team cant do much in the post season but that is only true if it was a normal season. Right now too many things are up in the air, we dont know how Covid situation will be, which players will be available and when... So basically if a PO team gets lucky and has their players healthy and the opposing teams best players are out for 3-4 games in POs, then even the lower seeds can win any series. This is the year when practically any team can win it all and thats how they should look at the situation. So the no/lack of motivation excuse doesnt fly with me.

Don't you think that Brunson is profit taking in this strange Covid season already? Most of the teams just in surviving mode, teams' will play much different D in playoffs. And how will Brunson look, when Luka is back and his role changes? They're somewhat similar players, both needing ball in their hands a lot, playing a lot of Isos. The best would have been 1 running first and other second unit. I'm not sure that Brunson will be satisfied with that anymore.

If Brunson is really good enough to run Mavs, which I doubt very much, then it's no brainier. Trade Luka. You will get back enough to build contender.

You are completely missing my point and leaving out parts of my comments. But the main point remains that this season Brunson has been a positive for the Mavs and Luka has been consistently a negative. What will happen after Luka comes back from fat camp is yet to be seen but nobody cant deny that so far he has been way worse than everyone expected.

If I were the Mavs, I would wait and see how the next year goes. If he comes back fat after this summer, I would trade his ass by the deadline. Not being fat is the least he can do and he is not able to keep his weight in check. That is lack of discipline and lazyness and you cant win anything if your main player is not serious about his job like Luka seems to be this season.

I'm saying that what we have seen so far is small sample size in a weird season.

I agree that Luka was bad, but it was more difficult for him to return to form, after coming totally unprepared, because of his injuries/covid and playing in Kidd's new system. All players looked pretty bad in the begging of the season, what maybe should be expected, changing a coach is not the simplest thing.

Brunson in the other hand has taken his opportunities in a weird Covid season and Luka missing so many games. Great for him, but that basically means Mavs will need to overpay him. I don't believe that paying around 120 mio per season for Luka/Brunson/THJ/KP is good for Mavs.

Luka will need to show much better work ethic, if he wants to eventually win something and Mavs will have to decide in which way they go. Continuing with this roster is the worst thing to do.

Lets put it this way. If Cuban was smart enough to let Tyson Chandler walk after winning a freakin championship so he can save money until the right star came along, I think he can do the same for Jalen Brunson who has not won anything.

120M tied up to Luka - THJ - KP and Brunson is just downright dumb. Mavs need to trade Brunson for value before the deadline IMO.

Cuban was smart enough to offer Brunson a contract without PO resetting his trade value.
If some team wanted Brunson should only offer him a contract next summer, easy.

KP opponents shoot 11% worse when defended at the rim by Porziņģis this season.
6th in the NBA among players with 5+ DFGA and just 0.8% worse than 3x DPOY Rudy Gobert.
-Statistics-
Among players who defend 5+ field goals per game within 6 feet of the basket, considered rim protection, KP is 6th in the league! He only trails:

Giannis (2x MVP and DPOY) - 17.8%
Jarrett Allen - 16.2%
Evan Mobley - 15.3%
Precious Achiuwa - 13.5%
Rudy Gobert (3x DPOY) - 11.8%
Kristaps Porziņģis - 11%

He's ahead of BPG leader Myles Turner, and great defenders Joel Embiid, Anthony Day to Davis, Jakob Poeltl, Steven Adams etc...

Yeah KP's rim protection is back, the problem is that he doesn't defend the post, Powell does, and against physical bigs, both of them get tossed around easily, Powell is small and weak, KP is weak and high center of gravity, Powell needs to be replaced with a more powerful guy like Favors, and KP/Maxi needs to run the roll man sets.
The team constantly gets abused by big teams (watch the horror movie that was the Cavs game, or see what bench bigs like Tristan Thompson do to the Mavs).
This is bad news in RS, but in PO teams tend to go small, because bigs are constantly targeted, this team is much more effective against small teams than bigger ones.

To be fair, I think people are asking too much from KP. If it's not rim protection, it's paint defense. If not paint defense, it's scoring in thr 20s. If not that, then what else. I think his defense is adequate. Now if he can get a PF that can pair well and ne a big body and score inside too, then that would be great. I don't remember Mavs fans requiring so much from Dirk. Dirk scored and that's it. He played matador defense and would mostly just stand around while Tyson and Marion did the work. Luka and KP need to be surrounded by specialists and utility guys who will do the dirty work for them. Not sure if Cuban knows this by now. But it is what it is with Mr. Shark Tank.
