Why would they be worse?

Because half the defensive starters are graduating?

Because the O-line is a complete unknown?

Mertz will still be the QB?

Chryst is still the coach?

As for the defense, we saw Wohler and Turner flash last night. Peterson is supposed to be good. He didn't show a ton but he was out there a lot last night. Benton will be back in all likelihood and Chenal/Hicks may.

It can be argued that it's Chryst or Mertz for doing this, but the team still graded out at #11 in Sagarin but lost a bunch of games against tough teams.

They played the #5 schedule in the country. They lost to #4, #5 (neutral), #14, and @ #21.

I'm not gonna argue that I expect them to do a better job at punching up and beating teams they are equal to or inferior to, but the ball should bounce their way a bit more in some of these tough ones. They should have things figured out with Mertz given that while he's not great, a lot of the issues were from them not having **** figured out with him in there early in the year.

I'm not suggesting an undefeated season, but they should be good again.

I think they’ll be fine next year.

Young WRs look decent. Can st least get separation. Mertz and O-Line went from complete disaster first 4 weeks to average/slightly below average as the season went on. Maybe they take another step and allow some more things in the playbook to open up. Allen is a stud, but concerned about his ability to stay healthy if they try to ride him like they did this year. 1-2 guys need to step up at that position.

Tough to know on defense without knowing who comes back. If Benton, Chenal, and Hicks return, they’ll be a great side. If not, I still think they’ll be good, just not dominant like this year. Certainly, offense will need to bring more to the table and stop putting them in **** situation with 3 and outs/TOs like those first 4 games.
