The reality is that if he stays healthy he WILL get a lot better from what we last saw. What his peak is is still totally unknown, but it's certain he will get better if he can stay healthy.

Not according to the general board. He'll keep getting worse and injured and be no better than a prime Hasheem Thabeet, out of the league shortly.

Still hoping him and Looney can eventually be a formidable center rotation. His athleticism and size would be a nice contrast to what we have in Looney.

When someone puts forward a hypothetical changing the terms of the hypothetical in the answer isn't really following the rules.

Re: James Wiseman 2021/2022
I think James is going to be a good player, hoping he can be a cornerstone for us.
However,
the more and more I watch Lamelo Ball play, the more I think he's quite special. I can only imagine what we'd be like now if we had a lineup of Curry/Klay/Lamelo/Wiggins/Green on the court. Damn frightening for other teams.

Re: James Wiseman 2021/2022
Still have high hopes for him.
I think he will be a borderline All-Star by his 4th/5th season, if nothing unexpected (big injury, etc) happens.
The flashes of potential are just too strong for me to discard him as a player.
He seems to have a good head on his shoulders, and we surely have a great environment for him to realize his potential and have an awesome development curve.
For perspective, remember where Poole was until the middle of his 2nd season.
Go James. Make people eat crow.

Warriors front office and fans should just get over the Wiseman pick. Wiseman is a bust until proven otherwise.
Even Greg Oden has played more games at this point in his career, and Oden didn't even play his rookie season. Wiseman is a bust at #2. End of story

That's interesting math. By January 4th of his second year, Oden had played 28 games. Wiseman has played 39.
This movie is like the Rocky Horror Picture Show where everyone knows all the lines.

Those pesky stats can get in the way of a good axe grinding sometimes.

Re: James Wiseman 2021/2022
I don't get the incessant hate for or dismissal of Wiseman. What he showed in his short stint last year showed everyone how raw he is, but also how much potential he has. He's had very little experience in organized basketball at a high level, spent the months before the draft being trained by an ex-PG, had no summer league or training camp, and joined a team fielding mostly G-league talent. So, what should fans have anticipated for a #2 overall pick and what did we ultimately see?
1. Good ball handling for a big man. Check.
2. Good individual offensive skills. Check.
3. Ability to alter shots. Check.
4. General lack of understanding of a sophisticated ball movement offense. Check.
5. General lack of understanding of his role in a switching defense. Check.
Outside of his weak rebounding, everything Wiseman did last year was no surprise, particularly for a big man. But even his rebounding should not be a big surprise. Where has he had experience rebounding against 6-9 to 7-1 players prior to the NBA?
Wiseman has all the talent to become one of the best big men in the league. Will he? I don't know, but nobody knows that he'll be a bust either.
Will he ever be a force to evolve the game or become the cornerstone of the next iteration of GSW? I dunno that either. We saw Gobert become a liability in the playoffs last year, and I don't think Wiseman will ever reach Gobert's defensive level. We see KAT constantly lead his team nowhere, because big, soft perimeter shooting big men apparently can't lead a team, and I doubt Wiseman will ever reach KAT's shooting level. For all his talent, Embiid has yet to lead his team beyond the semi-finals, and I doubt Wiseman will ever be as good as Embiid as an all around talent. Bottom line is I don't know that any big will ever be the cornerstone of a championship team, unless the game evolves away from where it is now. But, if Wiseman's is able to maximize his talent, I fully expect him to be a valuable contributor to a championship team.

By that logic Embiid is a bust too.

This is really what it comes down to. People forget just how terrible JP was his rookie year. In under 24 months, he went from statistically being one of the worst players in the league to someone who’s projecting to be an all star in the next 2-3 years.
Wiseman had a really tough rookie season, but he wasn’t as awful as JP. And JP came in the league a college star who came into the league a very traditional way, whereas Wiseman was a glorified high school player who had played 3 games in his draft year. If he takes a similar jump to Poole does, Wiseman becomes Deandre Ayton within like 3-4 years. Which is ambitious, but much worse players became really good.
The “silver lining” for me for his injury is he had the privilege of a full year as a professional player with zero expectations- just watch the game and learn. A full year of no Draymond yelling at you, no Steph being disappointed when you mess up a play, no stern talks with Kerr, etc. Just before his injury, he looked like a shell of himself- no confidence at all. Seems like his break will do so much good for his confidence, since he’s now been around these guys almost two years.

Re: James Wiseman 2021/2022
^ Issue with Wiseman isnt all skill or talent.. its mainly demeanor and mindset. Every successful player the Warriors have had in recent years has been wired differently from Wiseman, at least on the surface. Wiggins is probably the closest, but would Wiggins have turned the corner without the prior two years playing how he wants to play and see it not working and hes also been healthy and playing. Wiseman saw firsthand the Team play night and day better once he was off the floor. He's also seen LaMelo become a star.. seems to be alot for him and a change of scenery would probably do both sides well.

Re: James Wiseman 2021/2022
I honestly do not get what some of you are looking at… Wiseman will be an exceptional offensive talent… watch the highlights - this is a rookie out of HS … that if he played 30 minutes a game - would average same as Evan now… but because of his lack of elite organized Ball …. He needs experience…. But if last years flashes are his starting point … He gonnabe aight’…. His defense will improve with effort and experience. But I loved that kid since he during a game when he was smashing. Wise side eyed Wanamaker … and was like … Yo throw me the ball…next time

You may be right. I think Looney was helped by being around the team while he was working through injuries his first two years.HabsAndDubs wrote:GSWFan1994 wrote:For perspective, remember where Poole was until the middle of his 2nd season.

I wonder what folks were saying about Kevon's "demeanor" and "mindset" back then.

Secondly as a True GSW fan purchasing the seven pack game special promotion, worrying if Ike Idogu would play his rookie year, looking at coxy’s banana man flying away… It’s ingrained in me to root for our rookies … I like our home grown talent and would rather wait a year to late judging their talent than a year to early…

Re: James Wiseman 2021/2022
Even more to the point...look at the trajectory of big men...very few start showing where their ceiling might be until 3-4 years into the league. Case in point -- Domantas Sabonis, who was a first time all star in his 4th year. Here is his trajectory from year 1:HabsAndDubs wrote:GSWFan1994 wrote:For perspective, remember where Poole was until the middle of his 2nd season.

Year Points Rebs Assts
1 5.9 / 3.6 / 1
2 11.6 / 7.7 / 2
3 14.1 / 9.3 / 2.6
4 18.5 / 12.4 / 5
DS didn't just land in the league as an All Star level big at age 20. It took time. For context, in Wiseman's first year as a 19 yo, he put up the following numbers: 11.5 / 5.8 / .7
So, somewhere between Sabonis' 1st and 2nd year production. There is no reason to be down on him, IMO.
Return to Golden State Warriors
