SPURS GAME DAY! GAME 37: SPURS AT RAPTORS, 4-1-2022, 6PM (CT)

Post#1 » by G R E Y » Tue Jan 4, 2022 8:24 pm

Our road trip continues on the front end of another back-to-back. Depleted and humbled, we forge ahead hopefully still smarting from the mistakes we made and ready to apply them. It will be tough without a trio that averages 40PPG together, especially for a team like ours that relies heavily on scoring distribution and variety of attack. But as always we go with who we have, knowing that even with this group we can and should play better. It's on us to protect the ball, guard the key and arc, and impose our transition game for better results.

WHERE: Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, ON

I'm surprised this game is happening with the entire province shutting down again today...

Have you heard anything on that Grey?

Update:I see they are starting most of it tomorrow (1-5) but I can't believe they are going to let that arena get full of fans tonight.

No fans in the arena. All tickets have been refunded.

First change was half full, so they returned all tickets and resold, then they said 1000 fans, to which MLSE was like, how could we ever choose which fans? There may be something like first responders or health care workers being given tickets, but yeah, no fans in the real sense.

There are even more restrictions in stores (50% capacity, I think) and restaurants (take-out only) for maybe two or three weeks. If they take away even more for Omicron, I think people will rebel. There's already protests in Quebec (then again, they're a different type all to themselves lol) but it's a harbinger nonetheless. The stricter measures are being blamed to a degree on the Ontario government for always being behind on what doctors suggest, they take the half-way approach, then play catch up. You can excuse in the first maybe second wave, but now?

Yeah there's very little appetite left, and since there are no fans and the teams can filed players, no reason it can't go on.

Pop rightfully at the refs early. Christ. We get pushed off with off arms galore but get hit the other way, silence.

Lots of unclean ball handling, lots of deflections and strips, especially on Tre. Thought he'd be better at making this adjustment by now.

1ST Q: SPURS 29

RAPTORS 30

There goes our 7-point lead courtesy of tons of TOs, missed bunnies some missed calls, and not getting D boards.

Bryn and Tre the turnover machines.

We need to curb their getting to the FT line and get to the FT line better ourselves.

At this rate we're going to run out of players with all the fouls called every time they drive.

Considering Keldon, Tre, Jock and Primo have one basket among them, a collective 1-14!!!- it's lucky we're within 6 points. Just too much pressure on everyone else. Keldon has looked a shell of himself the last four games or so. We need him to step up. NEED him.

Primo just floating around out there again. I really don't like his motor.
And is he being told to just stand in the corner like that? I'm growing tired of him just standing there but if he isn't being told to do that, why aren't the coaches up his ass?

I can't really tell if he's being lazy or just unsure what to actually do out there. Its like he's been told to just stay out of the way.

And just like that, a 14-point deficit on a 14-1 run.

2ND Q: SPURS 53

RAPTORS 68

By all means, let's keep letting them kicking and making the extra pass for one 3 after another. They've more than doubled our 3s 12-5, are winning the boards 30-26 and 12-10 on O boards (plus multiple points off of second chance points), already have given up 11 TOs for 13 points given up. Also, they've gotten to the FT line 12-16 to our 4-7

We're winning the points in the paint battle 34-14, but given that both teams have made 22 FGs, the kind of shots each team is generating is central.

We're nowhere near as physical, stopped pushing the ball quickly, not finishing hard at the rim, and not contesting for the ball at our rim either. It's like we're trying to walk the fine line of using some energy for this game to stay withing a certain amount and maybe strike at a couple of key moments to save energy for tomorrow is all over this team.

But we don't look confident behind Tre's decisions making either. Just molasses and lack of surety when the PG who doesn't play a lot isn't looking good either.

Just like running through molasses.

Devin looks great. Diop and Jakob are the only other efficient players for us. Given we're missing two starters and first bench player, and that we rely on scoring distribution, only three efficient players is... suboptimal.

We just gave up two 30+ point Qs so starting with at least some better physicality and ball protection would be nice to see.
