1. He 99% mistakenly referred to Kevin Porter, a former Wizards player (6 years there, 4 time assist leader), unless you guys thought he was waiting for the exact moment that KPJ made a dagger buzzer beater to refer to his actual father's gun charges and had a death wish of wanting to get fired by saying what he said. You can argue that this guy needs to do his research instead of assuming, just a very **** coincidence.
I think the announcer thought of the wrong Kevin Porter.
With that said, I dont think anyone's crazy.
Many fans also made that mistake (like myself when I first heard it), but in this case, the announcer informed the public and said, "like his father". It may be worth noting that it lacked planning & communication with his research team (to say the least) and he went in with an unverified conclusion (likely reached by a couple assumptions he made or indicators he noticed that made him think that his conclusion was a fact- otherwise he wouldn't share it with the public as a member of the media).
There are strong reactions to the idea that this announcer would intentionally say this (which again, I dont think he did). That makes sense to me. The casual fan (or the hard-core fan) doesn't know about the Washington Bullets player, Kevin Porter, from the 70s.
There are larger topics here imo outside of realgm, including the Wizards organization with its public perception history around guns: (Washington Bullets, the situation with the guns in the locker room and now this).
The NBA, USA, and humanity as a whole has a complicated & strong relationship with guns, and the lives they impact (imo). It brings out a lot of ìntense reactions in unintended places imo, along with other overarching topics in this really **** situation. Im not suggesting any call to change with this post: just pointing out what I think I see, and I could be wrong.
Wishing & sending good thoughts to the family members & loved ones of both Kevin Porter families & those impacted, young and old.
