Re: Prime Wilt Chamberlain vs. PRIME Antetokounmpo 1-on-1
I don't get this thread, are we talking about 1v1 or going head to head in a game? Is it post 1v1, or is it regular 1v1 where you start at the top of the key, or are they doing different spots?
Is their a dribble limit (eg: three dribbles) or is it unlimited dribbles?

I hope Giannis doesn't miss because in Wilt's worst of his 16 seasons, he still averaged 18.4 rebounds a game.

That hook-shot Jabbar took is probably 12-13' in the air. The feat of blocking it, is nothing short of mental.
Truly mental!!
How about the feat of blocking it after Wilt had reconstructive knee surgery, in his mid 30's, and lost a foot on his vertical compared to his prime?
By the time he faced Kareem, his vertical was down from 45" to about 35". He still held his own against peak/healthy Jabaar, blocking 16 of his shots in 1 playoff series (1971 WCF).

Because some people actually have basic knowledge about 1960s NBA?
So I don't need to inform you have bad basketball was back then if u compare it with nowadays.
Should you also be informed about the luxury players have today, because not only do they have TV but also the internet? There's more, but I'll stop there.

What newbies refuse to recognize is that elite players, such as Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Lebron, Joe Montana, Walter Payton, Jack Nicholas, Jim Brown, Joe Lewis, Ali, Jackie Robinson, Sugar Ray Robinson, Usain Bolt, Jesse Owens, Pele etc. would transcend any era. I would even imagine some Spartans lol.
Imagine these guys with todays nutrition, sports science? These kids only know the present and have little to no idea.

Re: Prime Wilt Chamberlain vs. PRIME Antetokounmpo 1-on-1
I can't remember what medium (might have been Open Court) this conversation took place in, but it was Isiah Thomas who really put things into perspective for me.
I think they were having a discussion about who they patterned their games after. He said he patterned his game after his older brothers. And that was due to the fact that he rarely saw the product (basketball), on television. So really a lot of these guys back then were just "hooping".
I recall even Jordan (he's only 2 years young than Isiah), saying something similar; that he rarely watched basketball growing up.
Much of the reason why players are said to be more "skilled" today is because they actually got to watch the product they began playing. Thus giving them a model for which to follow.
And before someone says it, sure you had ESPN since the late 1970s, but not many households had cable.

Re: Prime Wilt Chamberlain vs. PRIME Antetokounmpo 1-on-1
To be honest, the availability of games on TV and strict training programs made basketball a bit less exciting in some ways. When you watch NBA from the 1970s, you can see so many creative and unique basketball players. Not all of them were amazing, but it was very fun to watch so many different approaches. Now everything is more controlled and maximized, but also more predictable

Wilt (pre-knee injury) is simply too strong, and athletic for ANYONE to handle. He was routinely abusing Bill Russell (arguably one of if not THE greatest defensive player in NBA history) in their head-to-head matchups despite losing many times to the Celtics. I think Giannis would also have a very difficult time scoring on Wilt because he was remarkably agile and quick for a man his size.
The most talented centre in NBA history is Hakeem Olajuwon. But they’re are many days where I wonder if even Hakeem could score effectively on a prime Wilt.

Wilt is the GOAT. This literally isn't fair to Giannis.

You guys always take it a step too far, Hakeem scored on Robinson, Rodman, Eaton, Mutumbo, Mourning, Shaq, Ewing, Parish, Kareem etc and had a 46/19 game against a young KG, a 27/12 game against Duncan in 99 when he was way past his prime. There are a combined 11 defensive player of the year awards between Robinson, Rodman, Eaton, Mutumbo and Mourning and none of these guys could even pretend to slow him down.
Nobody is stopping elite offensive talents from being efficient.

Wilt is one of like 4-5 players ever who has a case to be called The GOAT on sheer dominance over all his opponents, defenders. Giannis has never been the best player in NBA, top 5 at best when it counts in playoffs compared KD,Lebron, Kawhi,Curry etc
6'7 Kawhi could slow him down in 2019 playoffs 1 vs 1 because Giannis has no real midrange, is just now learning back to basket moves, paint scoring that isnt dunks. The guy is great superstar but he won NBA title feasting on skinny, not very big Ayton in the finals. In a game or 1 vs 1, it is sheer fantasy to compare old Wilt or young Wilt to Giannis. Russell got owned,Hakeem, Duncan,KG would get destroyed too. Giannis is great rim protector, help defender but unless he is best ever big man he can't slow down Wilt...

Yeah offensive talented superstar, legends will always score, I'm thinking more realistically most would lose individual match up vs Wilt. Like Russell lost badly everytime but since nobody beats a a HOF team for titles when his teammates are not near his level.NoDopeOnSundays wrote:Tustari wrote:Wilt (pre-knee injury) is simply too strong, and athletic for ANYONE to handle. That's mainly it. There's a pretty well known Ted Talk video where someone goes into detail about the differences in performance between Jesse Owens and Usain Bolt is more about the modern shoes and track surface and runners blocks than anything innately biological.
There have always been athletic freaks of nature in every era, they didn't emerge magically sometime in the mid 80s or so.

None of those dudes are Wilt though. Wilt is a whole different animal. He is perhaps the ultimate combination of strength and athleticism. The only dude who Hakeem faced who was somewhat similar (but still nowhere close) is Shaq and it is well known that Dream struggled mightily to guard Shaq.
