SPURS GAME DAY! GAME 40: SPURS AT NETS, 9-1-2022, 11AM (CT)

The first of a back-to-back has us playing an ungodly early game, but it's the same conditions for both teams. What isn't is the roster, and that's unfortunate but that's what we have to deal with now. If we catch fire with new guys making shots, preferably 3s, we can make a game of it. As ever, it's D-out, two-way play for the whole game for us that gives us the best opportunity.

Lonnie frankly carried the team through the first 12 points when he led the Nets 12-11, then it was a series of swings back and forth, but despite some bobbled rebounds and D miscues, we held our own on O.

Tyler made a 3, already an improvement over not taking any shots last game, and Primo hasn't been shy about presenting his game to good effect -- on both ends, fighting over screens, staying with Patty, contesting well.

DJ's being himself and it's been great for us.

We're making our 3s and getting to the FT line, so already an improvement on the two main things we were lacking the last couple of games.

Very good team start all things considered.

What's a word that rhymes with 'Bryn' but means 'if you aren't going to just catch and shoot but instead try to overdribble and get burned on D please just GTFO to the bench'?

So SOOOOOOOOO bad.

Anyway, when we had Lonnie and DJ in the line-up we had a seven-point lead.

Then we had subs go in and succumbed to a 14-0 run for their lead.

I mean, we're facing a team with cheat-code O firepower. And we stopped penetrating or moving for the PGs to make any passes other than sideways.

Primo's flexing but the young man has taken 11 shots, tied for most on the team, yet made only two baskets. Trying to show himself but isn't there yet - just a step behind on layup or too off balance on some shots. He makes creative moves, you can see the talent, but you can also see the inexperience.

I like what Cacok brought in terms of toughness and hard finishing at the rim and rebounding.

Jakob is surprisingly only 2-6, and with Diop 1-4 and Jock 0-2 our front court is hurting on O. Jakob is doing what he can on the boards with 4 on O, and contributing in other ways, but there's only so much one guy can do.

We're depleted, yes, but again, what's stopping us from running back on D or picking up opponents in transition? These are effort plays.

Our 3s are keeping us in the game as we've made 7-20, but as they keep pushing in transition we keep fouling them to the tune of 12-14FTs to our 2-4FTs. They are only 2-9 from 3 but with the lead because of their hustle work.

No matter who is playing for us, there's no excuse for lack of hustle.

12-3 run by us on drives and kicks and much better ball movement. Oh and Jock making 3s. Awesome.

3RD Q: SPURS 89

Very proud of how we played in this Q. We were down at least 14 at one point and looked completely out of sync on both ends and put together good plays on both ends to cut the lead down to one basket after winning the 3RD Q 38-31 on an 18-7 run in the final three minutes.

Jock and Cacok stood out with good two-way play.

Kudos to Bryn for some solid scoring.

IF we can keep scoring from the 3s and prevent them from getting to the FT line we can make a good run for the win.
