Yep, would need at least a protected FRP from ATL or Jalen Johnson... Smart would really help them.
Also, I'd like for Stevens to get Ayo Dosunmu from Chicago. He may not have Nesmith's shooting touch, but he has some playmaking capability and is shooting 44% from 3 this year. Some of that % is probably due to Chicago being a really good passing and shooting team.
Unless there's a plan to make Smart a 6th man, Boston needs to move on from Smart.
There's no plan to make Smart a sixth man because there's no way to get talent on the roster to make him a sixth man. You have to trade him for a role-player at a different position and a risk-reward young guy at the point. Very very hard to see Boston trading for a point guard upgrade right now, the market isn't there and we don't have the pieces, unless they want to deal Horford+ for John Wall.
They pretty much have 3 options, because it doesn't look like any well established pg is available, unless they're dealing off Jaylen Brown.
Option 1 - Deal for John Wall and hope he doesn't physically fall apart.
Option 2 - Deal for a pg with upside like Coby White.
Option 3 - Status quo and draft a pg like Ty Ty Washington.
Wall was actually not atrocious and relatively healthy last year, it’s just the money that’s brutal. No way we could get him without going deep, deep into the tax. He’s only a year and a half of bad money at this point, but the cap hit isn’t something you can take on.
Coby would need to go into a huge slump to be attainable for us, he’s been lifting up his floor every day.
Only other hope is for a team to do something stupid. It’s just not a good market for point guards right now - Brogdon? If Indiana moved him, we don’t have the pieces unless they overrate Marcus. Dejounte and Haliburton are out of our price range. Talen Horton Tucker is in that Coby White tier where his value is going to get too high.
I’m hoping there’s a scenario I’m not seeing, but we need to wind up in the right place at the right time to have a shot.
Schroeder for Coby White, if the Bulls get title hungry and worry about his consistency ..?
Brogdon for Smart/Juancho/Romeo-Nesmith-picks would be our version of getting Jrue.
Right now Marcus for Bogdan/Reddish looks like the best case option.. or Smart for THT, which is stupid for the Lakers and stupid risky for us.
