Re: [Woj] Reddish traded to Knicks
Reddish for Knox, Solomon Hill and a well-protected 1st is more or less dumping Reddish. I'm surprised the Hawks did this, and I'm surprised they did it this far ahead of the deadline.
If I'm the Jazz, I'd offer a better package than this.

Knox is a thrown in, the return is a pick that will likely be a mid-late 1st one of the next 2-3 years. Plus Reddish hasn't been a good player overall so far, and it seems like he has some kind of mild attitude things--not like he's unhinged or a troublemaker but more like he's not willing to change and adapt so that he can be a solid cog and roleplayer in the NBA. He doesn't seem close to being good enough in the role he wants to play to be a major plus, and the Hawks already have folks who can step into his role. And he's up for an extension next year that the Hawks simply can't afford to give him without making bigger changes.
Recent complaints might have given the Hawks more urgency. They know what needs fixing, and it doesn't involve anything that a malcontent version of Reddish can bring.

Re: [Woj] Reddish traded to Knicks
I like this trade for the Knicks. (Have I ever typed this before?)
I'm lukewarm on Reddish as a player but he is young and there is clearly potential - the type of guy the Knicks should be looking for. The cost was reasonable as that first rounder has significant protections on it. If they gave up the pick to bring in a veteran it would be a bad move but Reddish can still get better, maybe much better, and he seemed to be a guy where a change of scenery might be needed to see if he takes the next step.
I suppose Knox could be considered part of the cost, but I doubt he has any value at this point besides as a contract. He obviously wasn't going to succeed In New York. Hopefully he can succeed with a different franchise.

Which we got from trading the 19th pick in last years' draft, so essentially we traded the 19th pick and Knox for Reddish.
I like it for your Knicks. Cam played pretty well in the playoffs last season.
Yeah, I like it cause we really needed a big, defensive wing. RJ was the only one we had, and he's not that big, and he's just okay on defense. As long as Cam's 3pt shooting keeps coming around, it's a good deal, and anything else is just gravy
Has to be another move coming, though. We have like 6 guys who play SG/SF that need minutes, and that's before Rose and Kemba get back from injury, pushing guys like Burks and Quick down a position.
Can't have too much talent, but it does create a log jam of guys that are all similarly skilled. For now though,
After such a chaotic season, it's hard to imagine we'll ever have a fully healthy roster but if we did...
Robinson(28)/Noel(20)/Gibson/Sims
Randle(34)/Toppin(14)/Hill
Barrett(32)/Reddish(16)
Fournier(27)/Burks(12)/Quickley(9)/Grimes
Burks(12)/Rose(24)/Quickley(12)/Walker/McBride
I love the trade, as I always felt that we were unlikely to ever use that Charlotte pick ourselves. I imagine, unless Cam totally takes off under a change of scenery, that we accept his option and don't extend him OR we give him a larger 1 year deal with a team option for year 2.
Go Knicks!

Re: [Woj] Reddish traded to Knicks
I like this deal for all parties involved but think it’s potentially complicated for the Knicks and they need to tread lightly because this deal might set the table for them getting screwed
Hawks rid themselves of a bad fit who struggles playing with their talented players and isn’t a good locker room presence. In addition they are loaded with young talent and he’s the worst of em, so it makes sense to focus your development on the better players and fits. Keeping him likely means letting him walk for nothing
The Knicks take a gamble on an athlete who shows Individual flashes but struggles with team play. I think Thibs is the perfect coach for this guy and it’s a low risk / decent reward play
So I like it for the Hawks, the Knicks, and for Reddish’s development
The one major concern is I can see Reddish showing minimal improvements and development but still flashing ridiculous potential he’s never gonna realize, and getting offered the bag. Knicks need to be smart and not lock him up for $22M a year if he’s only gonna be a $7M a year type player.

Do Knicks fans understand that they could have moved that protected pick for a player that isn't terrible?

I get Cam is inconsistent and all that. But he’s still really young and his shot is finally starting to get consistent. Just feel like many teams should’ve been willing to give up this kind of return to take a chance on him.
I think most teams don't have enough roster spots and minutes to develop a young player. The league is pretty stacked with talent these days.
Teams are not stacked. That's why most teams are resuscitating old players like Lance Stephenson, who are immediately getting big minutes.
That's why a young defensive player like Cam is valuable but most playoff bound teams don't have the draft capital.

It can be used for a bigger transaction in the future.

Cause you also gotta pay him this summer, he's probably looking for more than teams are willing to go based on past production and not future production. Seems like the Knicks are okay with throwing some bread around right now. Knicks are gonna have shed some salary soon or this summer tho
You actually don't need to pay him this summer. You can roll the dice on him being an RFA after next season. Knicks options are:
1) Sign him to a team friendly extension based on his performance the balance of this season
2) Trade him at draft time, where his low cap number makes it easy to structure deals, where his value could be up or down based on his performance the balance of the season. If he is decent this season NY could end up getting back a better draft pick for him than the one they gave up. Also, more contenders with restrictions on their draft picks will become eligible to trade the rights to that pick after making the selection on draft night.
3) Let him enter next season on a prove-it year, knowing you have the opportunity to offer more than anyone else (extra year or larger raises) or match any RFA offer. Yes, this also creates the potential for a team overpaying in RFA and losing him for nothing.
But I think we need to see how he plays this season, in the Knicks system, before anything else.
All that's true, but the most likely scenario that plays out is that he's somewhere between pretty okay and meh this year and next, then leaving the Knicks to either offer a risky contract or dump him for less than a pretty good pick like the CHA one. I don't hate the move cuz why not give it a shot, but I don't think it's a coup for the Knicks or anything.
Also Duke4life, looks his shot has been as inconsistent as ever this year--he flipped the script this year by starting off hot but then he shot 38% and 40% from the field the last couple months. The 3pt shooting has been a little more consistent but not particularly good overall, and at this point we're still talking about an inefficient player who doesn't seem willing to change his game up that much. Definitely not giving up on him or anything, but it's not like he's been right close to realizing his potential or seems just around the corner from a big breakout.

It's a low risk play at rehabilitating a lottery pick, if it doesn't work out so be it. We have one wing player on our team, what other under 25 yr old wing could we have gotten with that pick?

Knicks took on Solomon Hill too, who I imagine they will waive. My guess is this deal puts the Hawks under the lux tax (they were barely over it) and that played a big part in the decision.

Who could they have gotten with a non-lotto pick exactly?

As usual a bunch of Knick haters in this thread. If Cam was traded to OKC , a lot of you would be singing a different tune.

If the Hawks are trying to get better I don't understand why they traded Reddish for a worse player and a pick that might never convert.

I'm late to this, but I remember the initial reports saying the Hawks wanted a first for Cam. Then Hawks fans said that was BS and...well...here we are.
