SPURS GAME DAY! GAME 43: SPURS VS. CAVS, 14-1-2022, 7:30PM (CT)

You know how we used to terrorize the league with our twin towers? Well we're about to find out what's it's like to play again this opponent's version of that. Playing against a tall athletic front court tandem is challenging for us so we'll have to stick to our gameplan and make sure we keep moving, pressure the point of attack to prevent passes inside, and impose our game from the start. Regroup, stay focused, positive energy for the full 48 in this first of a back-to-back.

There's not much we can do about an alley oop once the ball gets tossed unless it's a foul or a lucky disruption of the ball at the rim, so the best chance is at point of attack to prevent the pass. Get on up on them on the perimeter!

We're doing a good job with gang rebounding on our end (and Keldon with that great O rebound tip in!) and we're doing very well pushing the ball in transition and finishing.

1ST Q: SPURS 26

CAVS 35

Well they're getting too open 3s and although we can't get all O boards from them, we can do a better job being aware of their positioning to better box them out.

They're 5-9 from 3. Like, run out to contest, yeah?!

We were only 2-2FTs so we have to impose our game more and get to the FT line more. Make it more difficult with our physicality and speed.

Primo with some good hustle work on both ends.

We're still scrambling on both ends and looking and finding a way. Good to see.

We are being pressured by their bigs into mistakes - change of mind in the air from shot to pass that they steal, a drive and hesitant pass to Jakob for their steal, etc.

See just there: DJ stays with one man, we switch, they cross court pass and rather than get on up right into the space of the guy with the ball, we instead sag for fear of a drive, they pass inside to one of their bigs uncontested, and the big makes a post up move for 2 at our rim.

GET ON UP INTO THE SPACE OF THE GUY WITH THE BALL TO PREVENT AN EASY PASS!!!

MUCH better D in the last several possessions - we're rotating and switching hard and not allowing too much space and forcing them to make quicker decisions and mistakes.

They're pushing off all over the place in our key and we get called for fouls. Explain that to me, please.

2ND Q: SPURS 59

CAVS 64

Well we won the 2ND Q on some hard fought hustle and pace but as we're being taught over and over, every play counts, and team play is our best chance to win.

We did great work to fight back form a nine-point deficit to tie and then take the lead in the Q, only for Lonnie to **** take two quick, early clock Js and miss, then drive and miss a bunny at the rim. Like on the one hand he keeps showing flashes of tantalizing promise, followed by mindnumbing decisions. Good pass followed by two selfish tunnel vision 'get mine' attempts. And we STILL can't trust whether he'll make his shots at the rim consistently.

DJ went into cape-on, mask-fitted, hero mode in the best way possible. He willed us last game just about single-handedly, and had a three minute stretch or so that flat out would not be stopped. He made great bounce passes, got a couple of O rebounds through their tree front court and scored, he pressured the ball well.

It's just that his back court partner was Bryn and well... in fairness, Bryn did ok in swiping at the ball in help D as they drove which I think disrupted them enough for misses a couple of times. He's scoring well, too, so doing his job overall.

We absolutely MUST be aware and put a body on them on our boards at all times. I've lost count how many times they've gotten easy putbacks because of this, even as the rebounding is pretty close at the half.

Jakob has been completely neutralized at 0-2 on O in part because they're sealing up the passes in the key on us, something we should have done form the start but did better in the 2ND Q. He's also missed some bunnies, so there's that, too.

Jock's filled in well after that initial airball with that dunk and getting fouled.

Doug and Devin need to get far more efficient. We simple need them to make more of their shots. They're combined 4-14. Plenty of chances, just not taking better advantage and we need to do better.

We're getting pressured into some mistakes in decisions and passing for 7TOs so far. Better in the 2ND Q, but their height had us on our heels for a while.

Like I said, every play counts, so Lonnie's miss followed by their end of Q 3 because nobody bothered to pick up the shooter at half court has us down 5 after being up 3-4 for a stretch in the latter portion of the 2ND Q.

Just some more pressure on the ball, at the arc, on the boards, and more pace pace pace. Get to the passes, get to the driving lanes, and push the ball. All out hustle in the second half!
