Re: Deandre Ayton year 4, the next step
Ayton is playing great. He has looked a lot better since that San Antonio game, the coaches must have had a discussion with him. I do think he deserves all-star consideration but the fact that we've had very little (to no) drop off when McGee subs in (or starts) for him likely hurts his chances. Many of McGee's advanced stats are better than Aytons. We're a very deep team and I think that will get some of our guys less all-star votes than they might deserve.

Yeah I was one complaining about his hands and general lack of ball control after that game but he's been much much better...still puts it on the floor too much but it hasn't been as glaring

Interesting he's ahead of Towns on those...though maybe it's more due to team record. That entire list is guys on teams over 60% winning % except Giannis who's team is 59.4%.

That's pretty great. Though I figure it's gotta help the efficiency having CP3 as a partner, so I think Chris deserves some credit too.

Re: Deandre Ayton year 4, the next step
I think the McGee acquisition has been great for Ayton. Iron sharpens iron, and now Ayton is getting to compete against and learn from a physical, strong, athletic, and confident center in McGee at practice instead of guys that aren't up to par physically like Holmes, Saric, Frank, or Baynes. There's still so much room for improvement with him on offense, but he's making strides.

Look at this highlights. He has the potential to do that every single night. Nothing fancy, not forced shots. A joy to watch.
He averages 17.1 points and 11 boards and he is a Top 5 defender at his position. Borderline All Star already and he keeps improving.
Cheers.

If he gets 17 or 18 shots he could avg 27 or 28. He got 17 when Book was out and scored 28, then 18 and got 27. Booker averages more shots and scores less.
Keep feeding him and we are more efficient as a team and even more efficient than a team shooting 40% from 3 which is 1.2 points per shot.
Ayton scores over 1.4 points per shot.

Out of the top 5 big men in that list... Ayton is the most talented offensive player and its not even close. Ayton with 17-18 shots a game is a 20+ ppg scorer.

I think 23-24ppg is likely... to be 27-28ppg he would need referees liking him.... the refs swallow their whistle when he gets fouled half the time if not most of the time.

That sounds good in theory BW, but I think its harder to get a big man like DA more good looks. A ball handling, shot creating guard like Booker can much more easily find 20+ decent shots a night than a post up/PnR big.
I'm not arguing that DA is more efficient or that we couldn't look for DA a bit more, but I think it is never as straight forward as simply saying "lets get DA more shots as he averages more points per shot".

Maybe, but they've been able to feed him more at times and he's shown he can get his own shot and keep up his scoring efficiency lately when he does.
I don't think he'd avg quite as much as I said, but it's possible. There are other Cs who get that many shots. Only a few but in time. I think as long as he gets 14-15 shots for now we are good. But he needs an uptick in avg # of shots. I think he will get more now that Booker looks for him more and has better chemistry with him.

One of the reasons why Book looks for him is DA is finally starting to read and understand the pick-and-roll better. That credit has to go to CP3. Still, at times, DA does get lost or rolls poorly. Hopefully, his future effort is sustained and his miscues lessen.

Yeah, Booker understands it better too and hopefully his miscues lessen too but I think using the pick and roll more often will help with his turnovers.

We all knew though he wouldn't get many shots in the 2nd half.
Season PPG:
1st half - 10.6
2nd half - 6.5
We can see that as an opportunity, he knows how to play as a 20 ppg player just not for the full game.

It's not usually him though. We've talked time and time again how they will feed him early and he will have like 10 pts in the first and then they will go away from it and he will end up with like 14. They don't typically look for him as much after the 1st though I'm not sure if it's the defensive adjustments...often times last night I'd see him going against 3 or 4 guys.
Also last night when we got the big lead his #s stalled...I tuned out at that point so not sure if he just sat the last half of the 4th or what.
