The 2000 Draft Class was BAD

Post#1 » by GeorgeMarcus » Tue Jan 18, 2022 1:47 am

This has to be the worst post-merger draft class, yeah? Look at the lottery that year:

1. Kenyon Martin
2. Stromile Swift
3. Darius Miles
4. Marcus Fizer
5. Mike Miller
6. DerMarr Johnson
7. Chris Mihm
8. Jamal Crawford
9. Joel Pryzbilla
10. Keon Dooling
11. Jerome Moiso
12. Etan Thomas
13. Courtney Alexander
14. Mateen Cleaves

And it's not like there were any major steals outside of the lottery. Besides K Mart/Miller/Crawford, only Quentin Richardson, Hedo Turkoglu and Michael Redd were relevant players. As a Cincy fan I think K Mart would have been a stud if not for injuries, but that's part of the game. Most of the others can't blame injuries for their disappointment. Woof.

Isn't this considered the worst draft post lottery by everyone already?

It should be if it isn't. That's not a discussion I ever participated in so most likely I'm rehashing old news for a lot of people

It was considered a horrible draft at the time, too. Best player by far was Michael Redd (2nd round, 43rd)...that's just sad.

I mostly remember it for NBADraft.net's player comparisons:

1. Kenyon Martin-Rasheed Wallace
2. Stromile Swift-Shawn Kemp
3. Darius Miles-Tracy McGrady
4. Marcus Fizer-Charles Barkley
5. Mike Miller-Lamar Odom
6. DerMarr Johnson-Scottie Pippen
7. Chris Mihm-Brad Daugherty
8. Jamal Crawford-Ron Harper
9. Joel Pryzbilla-Luc Longley
10. Keyon Dooling-Steve Francis
11. Jerome Moiso-Kevin Garnett
12. Etan Thomas-Antonio Davis
13. Courtney Alexander-Allan Houston
14. Mateen Cleaves-Mo Cheeks
...
23. Deshawn Stevenson-Michael Jordan

Forgot about Redd! Which is a shame because I was a big fan and had his jersey as a kid

This draft class was truly brutal. Only 3 dudes played in an all-star game from this class combined:

-Kenyon Martin
-Jamaal Magloire
-Michael Redd(The only dude to play an NBA all star game and be named to an all-NBA team)

Some other dudes managed to carve out a career such as the following:

-Brian Cardinal. Lasted 12 years, made $39M and won a ring with Dallas
-Eduardo Najera. First Mexican player to make it to the NBA. Lasted 12 years and Mark Cuban paid him handsomely and made $40M.
-Deshawn Stevenson. Lasted 13 years. Dude bought an ATM and had it in his house. Sadly he went broke after making $28M in his career.
-Desmond Mason. Won the slam dunk title in 2001. Had the potential to be so much more but his shot never developed, his FT shot vanished and he was doomed by injuries and had to retire at 32. Managed to play 10 years and made $38M.

Yea it's easy to say that this will be the only draft class that doesn't have a hall of famer although there may be a future draft class like this one waiting.

Trukaglu was pretty solid...maybe 2nd or 3rd best player.

Hilarious! I like how they claim Stevenson’s comparison is MJ and the guy goes 23rd in the worst draft in history. Spot on.

2013 was saved by Giannis and Gobert after the lottery..

Fun fact, McCollum was in the Bennett draft.. That feels like it shouldn't be true..

2000 is universally recognized as the worst draft of all time.

Using VORP here, 5 guys broke a 5 VORP for their CAREER in 2000. 11 guys have already done it from that draft class. I'd guess 15 will be almost locks to get there eventually. But wait

15 guys reached a career VORP of 1.0 in 2000's draft class.

2013 has 21 and at least 2 more are almost locks...

2000 wasn't just terrible at the top. It didn't even have decent rotation or bench guys. Only 17 guys got a career VORP of 0.1, or broke a value over replacement for their career of 0.

2013 is basically the same as the 1997 draft. It produced one all time great, another (potential) HOFer, and 1 more all star.

The difference is that 2013 had the worst #1 pick of all-time.

Still the king! The least valuable nba player of all time! He did far more harm staying in the league than someone who was out of it!

The 2013 draft had some good players.

Oladipo, solid fringe all-star
McCollum, solid fringe all-star
Adams, probably a top 12 center
Giannis, HOF caliber
Hardaway, solid bench scorer.
Gobert, top 3 C.

And a few other role players too like Plumlee, Bullock, Zeller, Schröder etc.

That draft got better the further you get from the top 5. Bennett was obviously a massive miss. Him busting so bad makes the rest of the class look bad by association.

The 2000 draft was basically a draft of Bennetts.

2000 is truly brutal. In 20 years if you show this list to a kid and say this is 2000 2nd rounders, the kid might actually believe it.

Joel Pryzbilla for example, the one thing I remember from him was Yao's 12/12 game.

How did guys like Przybilla and Etan Thomas go that high? What GMs were looking at guys like that and thinking they looked like star caliber players?
