If that ref didn’t see that happen when he was standing 5 feet away and looking directly at the play, why is he a professional basketball referee?

No one is going to convince me that this league doesn’t have an officiating problem.

Disgraceful.

The ref clearly mouths "I did not see it", but on the slomo closeup at the end of the clip there is a ref standing FIVE FEET AWAY ON THE SIDELINE LOOKING RIGHT AT THE PLAY. I mean...

pause the video at the 1:14 mark. Look at where the ball is, where the assistant touches it, and look at where the ref is. Hint: you won't have to look far.

The ref was probably watching Kuzma's feet to see if he is out of bounds and also see if he is behind the 3 point line in case he shoots. That's the ref who has to make both of those calls.

Loss of a draft pick discussion.

There is no debate, he intended to do this, 100%.

Take away the win and suspend the offending coach.

I wouldn't get draft picks involved unless the head coach did it.

The assistant coach should be suspended for a long time. And that ref... I don't know how he did not see it.

On top of the suspension,

You have to take away the win or replay the game from that moment. The response to this has to be severe otherwise it's not enough of a deterrent.

And... check the refs vision. Everyone BUT the ref saw that.

A lot of people point out that if KD had taken the shot from an inch further out the Nets beat the Bucks last year.

Now we know the real problem is that this coach waited too long to take initiative.

Give the win to Wizards, fine assistant coach a hefty percentage of pay, suspend rest of the season and ban him from the courtside, preferably permanently.

This is something you just do not do. Ever.

In this Situations the ref looks at the players feet and not at the ball since there was no opponent near for a potential foul

Yeah, officials are going to make mistakes - but the egregious thing there is that a coach would actually deflect the basketball. That's incredible to me. Yeah, it was a spur of the moment thing, but... who the bleep cares? He did it, and he has control over his actions.
That's pro wrestling style bs that just can't happen in an NBA game.

You can't replay the game or take away the win. That is why there is referees and the like and human error is part of the package/entertainment. But coach should be suspended. Seems like the coach just was mindlessly reacting and not thinking in the moment about trying to deflect the ball from the pass etc. No way he would actively think he could do it and get away with it. It was 100% reaction to reach out with a basketball coming in his direction.

So the message being sent is "Steal a win if you can get away with it..."

Might as well have an assistant coach trip a player at a key moment when the ref's back is turn. You get the win and only have to lose an assistant for a suspension.

Agreed. There needs to be enough repercussions for the team so this isn't seen as an option. I forget which team but in the NFL a sideline staff member tripped a player while they were running. If the only punishment is a couple games for a coach to interfere, then if my team is about to lose due to a turnover leading to a fast break, then I'd get on the court and stop that play too lol

i don't see how that coach gets anything less than a 10 game suspension without pay. What he did was a complete insult to the entire sport of basketball.
