We aren't competing for a championship until we get a superstar. That 2027 lakers 1st when lebron is old has value. lots of value. They obviously will be bad. That pick could help us get a superstar down the road
Gross, no thank you. I'm not giving up Trent. Especially for Lakers garbage.
I will never understand what a team fan of any kind would be happy about getting a pick 5 or 6 years from now. I mean....you're looking at that player having a meaningful contribution in 7 or 8 years lol. Also....it's extremely unlikely the Lakers will take that long to recover from the post LeBron phase. They will only be bad for 2 maybe 3 years tops. It's still LA. They will always be able to build their team through free agency.
Because getting distant future picks helps build continuity. Especially if it's likely that those distant picks will be in the lottery.
Just one won't really do much, but if you get a pipeline of future picks coming through, those picks eventually become near future (and then present) picks, which allows you to build a team focused on competing, but knowing that you still have draft lottery involvement coming down the line.
It's extremely long term thinking, and you need to already be a team that can compete in the present for it to really be worth it. But if you've got that all together, it's a recipe for being constantly relevant.
(Speaking in general terms, not specifically to a Raptors/Lakers trade)
