He literally has already dunked the ball 20 more times in 165 games than Derrick has in 672.
Morant's FG% at the rim is substantially better than Rose's was at any point in his career, and even as a rookie was better than any Rose put up aside from a few years as a role player.
Rose is for some reason remembered as this dominant force at the rim, and he just never really was.
Rose had a better mid range and the tear drop to go with the handles. Ja is horrible outside of 10 feet.
D-Rose(MVP season) shot 45% from 10-14 ft and 40% from 15-19 ft. In comparison, Ja Morant is currently shooting 38% from 10-14 ft and 16% from 15-19 ft.
Ja NEEDS to dunk to be efficient whereas Rose could kill you with his jumper/tear drop.
If Rose was settling for 45% shots instead of going all the way to the rim, that's a knock on him, not on Morant.
Ja is shooting 72% at the rim this year to Rose's 61% his MVP year. That's a massive difference in finishing ability between two guys shooting a similar number of shots at the rim.(They are both right at 29% of their attempts being with 3 feet).
It's not a difference in volume at the rim, it's a massive percentage difference in their actual ability to finish there. It's not that Rose is just deciding to take more shots in other places. Morant just makes way more when they get to the cup, and the differences from the midrange isn't enough to mitigate it, which is why Morant is scoring more points on less FGA and FTA overall.
I mean, the spacing in today's NBA is vastly different than when Rose played, no? On top of that, Rose played on a roster with only 1 shooter. None of the bigs were a threat and clogged the paint and he still had to score.
I think this isn't really a fair comparison. Rose definitely had greater strength and speed than Ja. It'd be interesting to see what he could do in today's game.
Although your point is also irrelevant to the OP anyway, he's just asking about pure athletic ability. I'd take Rose on that overall no question, although I think Ja is a slightly better 2 foot leaper.
