Re: 2023 NBA Draft
We had a discussion started on the Future Draft prospects thread. But Im all for officially starting up 2023 class thread.
Start off with my homer take. I know Lively is the higher ranked prospect at the moment for Duke, but I like Filip better as an NBA prospect at the moment. He has been so good as of late. I might have him #1 out of the US high school kids coming into college next year at the moment.
Also the free fall of Emoni Bates definitely isnt shocking to me.

So when it’s all said and done will 2021 or 2023 be the better draft?

I'm not familiar with 23 yet but I am going to say 22 will be better than the prior few.

Emoni Bates is 21st in one of the latest mocks. I understand he's been exposed somewhat, but the guy was once seen as a legit top 5 prospect. I mean this draft is shaping up to be monstrous.

I think Emoni was more of this media creation more than anything else. Emoni grew early while having a nice looking jumper and some flashy handles. Because of that so many people got super hyped for him to be the next KD and stuff.
But I think many were quietly (some not so quietly) were raising legit questions about him. His frame is horrible, his arms are tiny, there seemed to be a legit lack of quickness and explosion compared to average high school players.
I won’t be shocked if he isn’t even a 1st round pick by the time the 23 draft comes around.
He’s not just an average athlete, he’s bad in the athleticism department, it’s a legit negative. He really brings nothing else to the game either than shooting and he hasn’t even been good in that department.
I’m not sure how high of demand there will be for a 6’8 180 forward who has a negative wingspan, a negative in the athleticism department, doesn’t rebound, has almost a 1:2 assist to turnover ratio (not 2:1), can’t create any space in the half court and is only shooting 33% from the college 3 and 68% from the line.
Take away the name, that’s not even a legit NBA prospect let alone a 1st round prospect.

Re: 2023 NBA Draft
My early #1 is Kyle Filipowski. This kid can dish, can shoot, can defend and plays with tons of energy, all in a huge 6'10" package. His body looks filled out for his age and has great potential to grow looking at the size/width of his frame.
Filipowski actually got scouted by Scheyer as a 3 star (rank 100+), signed as a mid-4 star (rank 50-ish). Has risen rapidly now to #2 on 247 and Rival, ESPN #5. I am confident he is on a trajectory to #1 in his class in the final ranking.
(Wemby hasn't actually been that good if you look at his play lately)
(Scoot is probably his greatest competition right now)
Just look at the guy's size, handles and mobility in this video. Keep in mind this dude can and might get listed as a 7 footer in the NBA.

If you've watched Emoni play in college, why do you think he still is a top prospect? He has so many weaknesses and terrible measurables.

Let me stop you right here before this gets started...the level of competition between what Wemby is going against and high school is otherworldly. We saw Wemby vs. the 2022 draft class and he was easily the best player on the court. Not even close. If Kyle Filipowski was in his class he would have been on Team USA with Chet and Ivey.

2023 NBA draft will be better unless projected #1 pick Victor gets hurt

Re: 2023 NBA Draft
It's crazy that Duke has #4/5/6. If that's the case come 2023 draft night, has that ever happened with three players from the same team in the top 6, or even 10?

Zion (#1), Barrett (#3), Reddish (#10) in 2019.
Duke has #1 (Lively), 3 (Flilip), 5 (Whitehead), 13 (Mitchell), 60 (Schutt), 167 (Reeves) coming in next year.
The Zion superclass was: 1 (RJ Barrett), 2 (Reddish), 5 (Zion), 15 (Tre Jones), 33

I think that it is too. This draft has a bunch of sophomores that didn't do so well as freshman and freshman that are reclassified high school seniors. The amount of raw talent is unusual. People in the future may explain it as an after effect of the national health issue of 2020. 2021 NBA draft perhaps didn't have all of the freshman in it that it should have had if those guys could have prepared for their college season better without health restrictions. There are a ton of guys who actually played this college season as 18 year olds. That's unusual. Teams that know how to pick and develop have more of a shot this season than normal IMO.

I dont think there is a Zion caliber guy with this class for Duke. But I think its a much better fitting team. Going to be very interesting to see if Scheyer gets the best out of them. With their size, they should be able to dominate most college teams.
