Not top 5, but maybe 8th or so, while having the top offense easily. That team is was a favorite over, and likely beats the Spurs without those BS suspensions. And that was basically the NBA finals in 06-07 after Dallas got ousted.

I can't say if this team would be a favorite over the 06-07 Spurs like the 06-07 Suns were.
the 06-07 team was 15th in the league on defensive rating, and offensive rating is basically the same at 112 with this year's team. both this year's and last year's teams were more balanced than the 06-07 team. not to mention nash's teams were not elite in the clutch like cp3's

We didn't care much for defense, we certainly didn't take pride in putting in the effort to play great defense. We had great defenders like Trix, KT, Raja and Diaw but just having good defenders isn't enough because it's not an individual sport. You can't individually play good defense to shut down NBA offenses that are built to beat a 5-man NBA defense. D'Antoni never cared for defense and it's almost like the good defenders on the team were playing defense on their own island.

I think the big difference between our team now and then is that while our offense may not 100% match the 07 Suns SSOL offense, we have the defensive focus, defensive pride, defensive system and the defensive personnel to potentially shut down the 07 Spurs. We can also now play half court basketball with the best of them because of CP3 and even Booker is pretty good at operating in the half court too. We don't really have any players on the team that couldn't function in the half court. We can run, we can slow things down, we execute in the clutch and we have defensive players to throw at their big 3.

We all remember how devastating the 07 Suns were in the regular season but when it got to the grit and grind of the playoffs, there were always concerns that our fast paced, open floor offense would be severely limited by being forced to slow down and playoff the half court offense which wasn't our game. We struggled with the Spurs back then because they forced us to play their brand of basketball, they could score on us in the half court because that's their bread and butter and they limited us offensively just by slowing down the game and on defense, they were elite too. So they forced us to play a slowed down half court game which we weren't good at and they were elite at defending against and we had no answers for that aside from trying to push the pace.

53W-13L

This team is better than last year's team because so many players have improved their games (Book, Cam J, Mikal, Ayton...) and CP3/Crowder haven't slow down yet.

And we have changed 6 players on the roster. Probably all of them are improvements.

● Ty-Shon Alexander - Ish Wainright ( Two-way contracts).
Definitely Wainwright is more useful for us because he can cover 2-4 and is more experienced.

● Etwan Moore - Elfrid Payton.
Probably it is a wash. Both have had their good and bad moments as a third string PGs for us. Payton better on defense, Moore better on offense. Wash.

● Jevon Carter - Aaron Holiday.
Holiday looks the better player because he can really play on and off the ball. He can create and defensively he is not worse than Jevon. Upgrade.

● Galloway - Shamet.
Shamet is better on both sides of the court. He can start for us if needed. Upgrade.

● Nader - Biyombo
Nader had serious physical problems and we needed a better rebounder and a third string C. Upgrade.

● Jalen Smith - McGee
In the long run probably Jalen will be the better player, we don't know, but for now Javale is clearly the better player. Upgrade.

with the exception of Payton and until recently Shamet, the real difference is that we can actually USE this year's guys in important games where last season we couldn't. Moore and Galloway hardly played in the playoffs.

It's the first Suns team with their own #1 draft pick on it. Hope that means "yes it it" at the end of the season.

At this point, I can't argue otherwise.

This team has been fun to watch all season no matter what.

Booker going down is reminiscent of the Bulls going down to Philadelphia after Derrick Rose was lost for the series in the first round about a decade ago.

To be fair, when this team was on, they played as well as any other suns team ever (or better). But they've been massively disappointing since Cam got injured and this was the biggest choke jobs in the playoffs I've ever seen.

This was all time awful. I wouldn't hate it if I never saw any of these players in a Suns uniform again. I've seen 20 win teams put in more effort.

Saberestar wrote:Legitimate question...there have been a better Suns team than this 2021/22 Suns?

I can't see it watching our last season's success reaching the NBA Finals and this current 14 game winning streak (and counting).

This team have it all. Great GM, great HC, an amazing couple of perennial All Stars, two upcoming borderline All Stars in Ayton and Bridges and a nice bunch of very good role players.

I can't find a better fourth option in the league than Bridges, he could average way more points per game on any team in the league. The same can be said about Ayton who would have a lot more touches offensively on almost every other team.

We are stacked even with three players out because of injuries. Saric, Kaminsky and Nader. That proves how deep and talented our roster is and how wonderful job James Jones has done as a GM.

Discuss.

They were the best Suns team I've ever seen... and they got absolutely destroyed.

Tells you the regular season DOES NOT MATTER. EVER.

I will never trust a regular season like that ever again.

It was our best one in 54 years. It's doubtful we see one like that again.

Our current state reminds me of the 92/93 and 93/94 Suns. Got to finals, lost in 6, then following year lost in 7 to Houston. In 94/95 we got to 2nd round again and lost in brutal fashion to the Rockets again....wouldn't surprise me if Paul is still on if we have another solid season with playoff exit.

Then we were either 8 seed or missed the next year...had a late pick before Barkley's 4th year and got Finley. He was like the only bright spot. KJ was injured, Barkley less interested....then we traded Barkley for Cassell and Horry and things got worse with the Horry stuff. And traded Finley for Kidd maybe? I always get the Kidd trade, Nash pick trade and Marion pick trades mixed up. I think it was Finley for Kidd though.

36yo CP3 Suns - one of the best, 37yo CP3 Suns - one of the worst Suns playoff teams.

It's a shame they went out like they did. Completely choked in the playoffs. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth and wants me to see drastic changes to the roster. Great regular season team that didn't amount to squat. Not even top 5 of best Suns teams ever.

Difficult to process this. Last year's playoff run had so many incredible moments that I associate with this team - Lakers taunting us and then us punching them back, Booker's closeout game against them, Booker's triple double in Game 1 of the WCF, Ayton's valley-oop, Cam Payne's feisty 29 points in Chris Paul's absence, Chris Paul's magical closeout game agains the Clippers in game 6, those fantastic Valley jerseys.

All those memories have now been sullied by this utterly embarrassing meltdown. Can't see how can I ever look back at this team fondly again.

It's difficult to find a reason for why we folded as badly as we did and that's because the truth is there were a multitude of reasons which were simply papered over by an amazing regular season record.

We need to take a good, long hard look at this. Particularly James Jones and Monty Williams - they need to have a fundamental relook at the way they approach things.

With Jones - I just don't trust his talent evaluation or asset management ability. I trust his character evaluation completely. But Jones doesn't seem to even believe that the former matter. That needs to change.

Monty too needs to understand that spontaneity and creativity are as important as meticulous preparation. We don't see enough of that from him.
