Can't verify if this is legit or not, but this guy says there's a video that you can access on the NBA app that accidentally announces LaMelo as an All-Star:

Bench players very rarely make all-star teams.

I actually checked that once. Ginobili did it. At least one of Detlef Schrempf and/or Dennis Rodman did. McHale may have the last year before he was a starter.

And I think that's it for the past 40 years.

Ricky Pierce in 1991 (22.5 points off the bench, started in 0 games), Kobe was voted as a starter (!) in 1998 (despite the fact that he came off the bench in all but one games that season), Dan Majerle in 1992, Chris Gatling in 1997.

Ginobili actually started for the Spurs when he played in ASG. McHale did that 3 times (twice in the 90s).

I'm surprised people picked Garland over Ball.

The Hawks once had 4 All-Stars as the team with the #1 record in the East In 2015 with Horford, Millsap, Teague and Korver. It’s hard to believe the Heat may only get one All-Star, if even that. I think Butler and Herro should get in at the minimum. Bam and Lowry should be in consideration as well but probably won’t be. The Heat have one of the best records against the leagues top teams too so they are a strong #1 seed.

The All-Star guards are loaded though, especially with DeRozan taking away a spot (instead of as a forward). Maybe more spots will open up if players miss the game.

Mitchell as a "starting" reserve over Doncic who you paired with AD as a wildcard? That's....interesting.

i'll be honest here

if you care about someone being placed wildcard over reserve as an all star you probably need to get a life

you want to debate if someone should be a "reserve starter" over a "wildcard" when it is not even going to make a difference in the history books

enjoy your pizza

West is interesting, as they're very Guard and Big man heavy. There are only decent options at SF/PF, with George and Leonard out. Kind of why Wiggins got in. I'm pretty sure if George or Leonard were healthy, either would be in there as a starter

East:
Guard: DeMar DeRozan
Guard: Trae Young
Frontcourt: Kevin Durant (Replacement - Levine)
Frontcourt: Giannis Antetokounmpo
Frontcourt: Joel Embiid
Reserves
Guard: Garland
Guard: Harden
Frontcourt: Butler
Frontcourt: Tatum

Wildcard: Beal
Wildcard: Jaylen Brown

Levine would probably start at a guard position, with DeMarr as a SF like he has most of the season.

No CP3? Tough omission.

Did Booker steal Your girlfriend? There is no way for 3 year in a row Booker will be commisioner replacement for injured player. Coaches will vote him in.

Wizards fan here. Beal shouldn’t sniff an all-star team this season. He’s been pretty bad in a contract year.

Darius Garland needs one of those guard spots. Especially with the game in Cleveland.

The Celtics are one game over .500. Zero percent chance they have two all stars.

Lakers are two games UNDER .500, 7th worst SRS in the NBA, and I see AD (who's only played 29/50 games) on a lot of people's lists to join LeBron

But I do agree that neither Celts or Lakers should be represented with 2 allstars

That was 7 years ago and the old ASG format. Kerr named starters right before the game. Now they have to know the starters in advance so the captains can pick their teams. In fact Tatum was a starter last year under the exact circumstances. KD was injured and JT was the 4th leading vote getter.
From last seasons game it says, "NBA Commissioner Adam Silver selected replacements for any player unable to participate in the All-Star Game, choosing a player from the same conference as the player who was being replaced. Silver's selection joined the team that drafted the replaced player. If a replaced player was a starter, the head coach of that team would choose a new starter from their cast of players instead".

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_NBA_All-Star_Game

I don't really care enough about this to go back and forth about it or post a bunch or tweets/articles. But the only reason it was on my mind and I said what I said was because last season there was the exact scenario where Durant was injured and the NBA/Silver elevated Tatum to starter by virtue of him being the next leading vote getter. So the most recent evidence is that's how they do it.

There are lots of tweets and articles about what happened with it last year, and new tweets and articles about how it will happen again this year, if you feel like searching google or twitter. Of course Tatum has be named as a reserve by the coaches first, but after that I'm expecting he'll be named as the replacement starter. In any case I guess we'll see.

East is far more competitive this year the Heat could drop all the way to 5th with just a couple losses. Don't think there's gonna any sorta record rewarding this time around just strictly stats and what not
