Re: Official Trade Thread - Part XLII
I said this the other day though, real life value vs. trade proposals that you see here or on Twitter. I did not expect Haliburton to be traded, so this Sabonis trade is more of an outlier, but I doubt a Grant trade would be anymore than 1 of Deni/Rui, pick and salaries to match.
Bickerstaff: who's up for kickball?!!
Ed Wood: Only if it's the no-pants variety.

Would Memphis consider Culver+Worst of Memphis 1st/Utah 1st/LAL 1st for Trez?
I love Trez, but he deserves to go to a winner and not this loser franchise. We get a late 1st for a player our cheap owner couldn't resign.

We don’t make smart moves like this. We want the feel good story of re-signing Harrell in the off-season and for him to help us fight for the 10th seed. He’s an emotional leader in the locker room or something like that.

LOL. Did you know Turd is the only owner who has never paid the tax? He sucks!

I mean...he doesn't move the needle at all really. At least Sabonis is a hail mary.
Man... If they overpay for Grant Im done.
Dinwiddie, KCP, Bryant, and Rui
for
Grant, KO, Joseph, and Livers
They get expirings and legit prospect while getting off of KO's remaining 2 years.
Sign me up for that deal. I like CoJo and Livers.

At first, I was outraged. But then I looked up some past drafts and it's really not so extraordinary. Outside of San Antonio and Toronto, it seems that guys picked after #5 very rarely stay for their second contract. Basically, if you are smart and lucky enough to draft an All-Star, then you keep him. Other guys are typically let go.
In the 2017 draft on 6 out of the 25 guys picked after #5 stayed:
Jonathan Isaac
Donovan Mitchell
Bam Adebayo
John Collins
OG Anunoby
Derrick White
In the 2016 draft 5 out of 25 stayed:
Buddy Hield
Jamal Murray
Furkan Korkmaz
Pascal Siakam
Dejounte Murray
In the 2015 draft, 3 out of 25 stayed
Myles Turner
Devin Booker
Kevon Looney
So only 14 of the last 75 guys picked stayed into their second contract, or just 19%. Ignore San Antonio and Toronto and it's 10 out of 70 (14%)
This just speaks to the nature of the new NBA. The only guys that stay are guys that are worth well more than the MLE so that Bird Rights and RFA rights are relevant to retaining the player. 12 of the 14 guys who stayed were either All-Stars or guys who were above-average starters worth at least $15M on their second deal. Only Looney and Korkmaz stayed at sub MLE costs.
This really only demonstrates that the Wizards haven't found a lot of high end talent out of the top 5. But to be fair, they haven't picked much out of the top 5 because they have either sucked into the top 5 or traded the pick. In the last 20 years, they've had only 8 non-top-5 picks (excluding Rui, Avdija and Kispert who haven't yet reached their 2nd contract).
Jeffries
Dixon
Pecherov
Young
McGee
Vesely
Oubre
Brown
An average team would have struck gold with just 1 of them. We struck gold on 0. Yeah, that sucks, but it's not really that glaring when put in context.

I'd call Javale a hit in the sense that he was valued enough to land Nene (and Javale extended in Denver). Young and Oubre signed relatively for big-modest money after their rookie contracts were over. They were good picks from where they were taken.

He's better than Dinwiddie (whom I hated the thought of whenever it was rumored we were after him).

The Wizards get a partial assist here for not drafting Hailburton as many here wanted.

I could go either way on this. Sato at $10M a year is neither a bargain nor a liability. He has been... okay.
We did get two high 2nd round picks out of the deal (but then subsequently squandered them for Aaron Holiday and Dinwiddie), as well as the cap room to sign Ish Smith, who was pretty decent for us.

Glad the Kings did the Wizards a favor.
That organization is without a doubt even more clueless than the Wizards.

Re: Official Trade Thread - Part XLII
If Brad is going to be out a significant period of time, then it makes no sense to making a move like trading for Grant. They're honestly better off getting into the lottery again, picking up another young talent and go from there.
What they should do is probably trade Harrell to a team like Memphis like mhd said for Culver and a pick.
Charlotte's always looking for a center, trade Bryant to Charlotte for Richards, Ish Smith and a 2nd rounder.
Playoff team needs shooting? KCP essentially has 1 year left on his deal, with the 2nd year having a $4 million guarantee. Maybe ring Phoenix up and offer KCP for Smith, Saric, and a 2nd rounder.

Yeah, I knew the Beal injury would screw everything up. So essentially, we will make no significant deal by Thursday and will shop for the bargain deals as we usually do.
