Re: 2021-22 General Thread
After the deadline,
I don't think we are going to trade for another piece that is going to be as important as Sabonis.
So it puts Monte on the clock to get a coach that optimises Sabonis.
TBH I don't think it will matter as much for Fox, he is going to get buckets, but he does need to learn to play off a big man that can pass.
Does anyone have suggestions on who this could be? I would really hate if Monte goes for a retread coach.

Re: 2021-22 General Thread
Kings are 3 games behind Pelicans which are #10 and 6.5 games behind the Lakers, which are #9 seed.
They are #6 in the lottery while Pelicans are #9 in the lottery.
What would be better for the Kings, to try to get in the top 5 of the lottery or get the #10 seed?
Well after the trade, it looks like they chose the latter, to get into the play-in at least.
Worst outcome would be they finish #11 and out of the top 10 in the lottery.

This move wasn't made just to make the play-in this year. it was made with at least the next two years in mind. We got a 25 year old All Star who was well sought after.
Maybe we could have waited until the summer to do the deal, or maybe Indiana had another trade lined up if we turned them down. Even a Turner trade they had lined up which likely ends up with them committing to Sabonis. Or maybe they fall in love with a guard in the draft.
I think we will be better this year, but incorporating Sabonis with 25 games left in the season, its going to take time for things to really mesh well. Chicago showed that last year incorporating Vucevic.
I'm not sure ultimately where we end up. Id say
Orlando
Detroit
Indiana
Thunder
Rockets
will all be worse guaranteed..
We probably do enough to pass up Portland and SA. That would put us exactly where Chicago ended last year at #8.
If we do enough to pass NY/Washington (who have 5 & 7 less losses than us, we will surely do enough to pass New Orleans). At that point this team will have had to finish something like 18-8 to finish the season meaning Sabonis had a tremendous impact, and they are not an easy loss against whoever finishes 7th (Minnesota, LAL, LAC). Meaning possibility of sneaking into the playoffs.
Again all this is unlikely. If I was a betting man id say we finish #7 or #8 depending how SA finishes. Murray is on fire and pop isn't a tanker.

I would love to see the Kings fall into a top 5 pick.
The Kings are no doubt wanting to make the play in, however I don't think it's going to be close really. We're #8 in remaining schedule.
Best case, as I said, we sneaking into a top 5 pick this draft, but the team, particularly Fox/Sabonis/Barnes/Mitchell show flashes of what is to come.

I knew Ox could pass the ball, I mean he is a Sabonis after all, but boy oh boy is he a lot better than I thought.
I honestly love watching this style of basketball. It's going to be a fun end to this season regardless of W/L.

Someone should make a 2022 draft thread. We are only months away. I've done it for the past few years but i think someone else should take over! Have some fun with it.

Re: 2021-22 General Thread
Okay, getting pretty amped for the Wizards game.
One thing I noticed with the new guys from the Pacers in the press conference is their talk about pace.
The Pacers are 20th in pace and we're 8th. This is going to be super fun watching Sabonis dribbling the ball from a rebound on the break.
We had a glimpse of Holiday running for Fox and once these guys get the confidence to run it will be great. We might see a lot of all star type scores.

Tim Legler absolutely destroyed Kristaps Porzingis on tv today

Let's not get the Zinger too worked up before we have to play them.
Looking at the next 2 games, Wizards and Brooklyn, both aren't going to be prepared. I know we have new guys too, but with someone like Sabonis it makes everything smoother until you can get practises in.
The Nets look likely to be without KD, Kyrie, BS, Harris and possibly LMA.
Looks like Patty and Seth will be loading up on 3 balls all night.

Porzingis and Kuzma is an awkward pair. Talented yet flawed. Did you see Kuz had a triple double tonight?
For the Nets dont forget about Cam Thomas. He got the start tonight, 27 pts.

I've learned with the Kings to never look ahead and think "should win". Hopefully sabonis changes that lol.City of Trees wrote:simonbampfield wrote:City of Trees wrote:Tim Legler absolutely destroyed Kristaps Porzingis on tv today

Still. I'll bite.
No irving, Simmons or durant playing for Brooklyn? We need to dominate that game no excuses.

It's basketball porn.
Noticed a lot of these cuts are from Lamb too. Obviously we know they have chemistry, but great to see still.

Haliburton had a fantastic first quarter. Multiple times in the 4th quarter he doesn't get to touch the ball because Buddy is trying to run the offense. Mic just picked up buddy screaming "I GOT IT, I GOT IT!"
Never change Buddy. Poor Tyrese, wish he didn't get stuck taking Buddy with him. But boy am I glad hes not here anymore!

I think I've painted the economic picture of this ownership and how it relates to win now moves, but aside from the fact that they are not big pocketed (save the Jacobs), and have been hit with covid financially - kings and other downtown projects, this:
https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/kings-agreed-to-phase-out-revenue-sharing-to-keep-team-in-sacramento/
This is still hanging over the head of the franchise
In order to keep the team in Sacramento, this ownership had to forfeit revenue sharing, which tanking small market teams have received

Started a thread on the General Board about this.
I wont rag on Vivek as much anymore financially as I believe this is the crux of the win now problem

I would say this is something more about the Governorship will bring in more and more. I don’t think this is Sacramento specific as much as it’s NBA specific.
Which is not great for smaller markets
