Not many shows can be consistently funny and stay relatively fresh for 15 seasons.

I think "It's Always Sunny" can be off putting with some of the low notes they have hit (Dennis rape jokes, Mac gay jokes, etc). But as you point out, they have always been able to hit some really high notes of: creativity, social commentary, and emotionally satisfying and complex character payoffs. I'm not sure I can think of another example of a show that has consistently hit such low, lazy, and easy comedy targets while also surpassing what any other comedy was doing. Its really unprecedented, in my opinion. As you can tell, I love it and I hate it. And maybe that's actually what they are going for. I can watch 2-3 episodes from any season and think.. this is pretty insulting and common. And then hit a 2-3 episode stretch in the same season and say "these guys are legitimately brilliant."

Thing is on most insulting type things in the show they're doing it to show the absurdity/insulting of it. Yea there's some PC terms you could say in 2005ish you can't now, but for the most part they are pointing out the bad-ness of those things and these characters. Not glorifying it. But yea a dude comedy still has to hit their allotment of dick/fart jokes, after all poop is funny haha.

I'm a huge fan and its a consistent background rewatch show for me. I'd say the last 4-5 years are hit or miss with probably about a 50% hit rate. Which after this long is still pretty good and even still the misses aren't awful. Think they might've played a bit too far into some of the characters at times, like say Mac becoming so needy to Dennis as an example. And at times since they're all mature adults now some of the recent seasons may be trying to do too much for what's supposed to be a dumb comedy overall. But again, after this long they have to do new things and 45 year olds are gonna think differently than when they were 27.

Also, Podcast is definitely worth a listen for any long time fans

I suppose what I was trying to say, is that "Sunny" is packaged in the wrapper of a cable sitcom for frat boys. That is probably the most common audience demographic. If you watched it once or twice, it would be easy to make that assumption. If you watched a randomly edited montage, there would be some indefensible and wince-worthy jokes. But there is so much more to it. Some of the episodes are smarter than any other sitcom. Some make brilliant social commentary underneath that "frat wrapper." Some episodes make you laugh out loud with brilliantly crafted situations that I haven't really seen since peak Seinfeld. And some are just daring you to clutch your pearls because they know they have crafted a gritty, dystopian, setting that is going to make you laugh even if the other shows on your DVR are pseudo classy things like Downtown Abby.

The global warming episode of Always Sunny (I wanna say Season 14?) is a masterpiece of comedy. I think as people have correctly stated, on the surface it seems like the show, especially early on, relied on cheap gags and physical comedy to draw in casual viewers. But it's always been some incredibly biting and brilliant social commentary. Remember, you're not supposed to like any of the characters because they're exaggerated caricatures of horrible and stupid people.

On one hand we are not supposed to like any of the characters. Agreed. On the other hand, Charlie is in my top five of favorite tv characters of all time. And when I found out he is actually married to the waitress in real life, poof, mind blown.

Yeah, lol at the idea that they're not gonna keep pumping those out like crappy Marvel movies from now until the end of time. The Jurassic Park franchise has completely lost all its luster for me. The first remake was so bad and forgettable that I honestly forgot they even made a 2nd one.

I've been catching up on the last couple of seasons, but have been going back and watching the classics. Genuinely missed the last season after Mac's incredible dance sequence.

Anyways, I rewatched the ep where Charlie goes crazy and 'unmasks' the conspiracy in the mailroom. Totally forgot the whole set up of the episode was b/c they didn't have health insurance and purely took the job for free, just for the health insurance. Their points on how stupid it was that there wasn't free basic healthcare, from the point of view of two idiots, was pretty hilarious and good social commentary as well.

I've not watched one minute of Sunny, I assume it's best to start at the beginning? I'm thinking of getting Hulu (although Lord knows I don't need another streamer).
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Kinda similar to other long running sitcoms that it has evolved over the years and the early episodes are much different but in the end probably want to start at the beginning.

Since the episodes are all stand alone, I would actually say binge the first 5-6 episodes to get familiar with the origin, characters, pacing, etc. Then just hit an internet list of "top 15 episodes." If you enjoy them, return and go through the whole run. If it doesn't grip you, then bail.

Better Call Saul's final 13 episode season begins 4/18. Six seasons, 63 episodes. Breaking Bad was 5 seasons (season 5 was split so you could say 6 seasons), 64 episodes.

There's a great line too this episode in the hospital when they realize health care isn't free and say something like "what are our taxes for, what is this some kind of socialist country? This is unamerican, you shouldn't have to pay for health insurance". Ranting and raving while actually have no idea on how anything works or what socialism means, heck could be a metaphor for today but it came out like 15 years ago.

Am I the only one that needs to cleanse with a series of Dodo videos after watching an episode of Ozark? Boy is that show dark.
At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.

Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

Like many sitcoms it takes a few seasons for the actors to flesh out the characters. Danny Devito’s character for instance is almost nothing like he is in his first season.

Count me in the Dennis club. I think he may be my favorite television character of all time, but all of the gang add something special to the unit.

Seasons 2-12 of Always Sunny are just awesome, especially 3-9. It’s just so consistently funny and literally every character is well written and well acted, even down to the most minor side characters. Quality has dipped a bit imo the past few seasons as they get older but they had a 10-11 season stretch of brilliance.

Agreed Dennis might be my favorite sitcom character of all time. Maybe not favorite character period, but definitely favorite sitcom character.

Seasons 2-5 are the sweet spot, IMO. I rewatch soooo many of those episodes. I have been loving their podcast each week too.

Fun fact: my RealGM name is from The World Series Defense episode in Season 5.

Just finished Boba Fett

Spoiler:
The Joan Jett led power ranger street toughs are so cheesy and look so cheap.

I like the big spider robots shooting above and below the retreating good guys for no reason. Also, they have these impenetrable shields but let’s just keep shooting at them anyway and trying to set them on fire.

Boba: “We can’t retreat. They’ll destroy the whole city.”(proceeds to destroy the whole city with his totally not a Hulk rip off rancor)

Mandos baby Yoda reunion should not have been ruined on this show and done in such a cheap throwaway full house moment. In general the Mandalorian’s inclusion ruined that series. Those first two seasons are basically irrelevant now.

Rancoors can now jump and run and penetrate force fields. Ok. Got it.

Literally the only good thing to come from this show was we finally got to see a wookie doing the things Han told the droids wookies do in a new hope.

Blue face: “I’ve known you a long time Boba. One thing I can’t figure is…what’s your angle?” Wow. Perfect summation of the character and this dumb show.

Hey…Memba King Kong!!!!?

Was I supposed to know who was in the coma in the after credits scene?

Disney took a fledgling franchise and just accelerated it. With a universe like Star Wars you could go any direction you want and create just about anything yet they just continuously go back to the same old ****. It’s lazy and boring. There’s no juice left in this giant orange.

Sorry if I missed this on here already, but looks like the final season of The Last Kingdom is about a month away (March 9th). Can't wait, but it'll be bittersweet knowing this is the end - this is one of my favorite shows out right now. Hopefully Vikings Valhalla (coming out on Feb. 25th) fills some of the void. The original Vikings was great, at least the first few seasons.
