Re: Ish Smith + Vernon Carey FOR Montrez Harrell
Hornets fan here.
You know what you got with Ish - a professional backup PG that changes the pace of the game nicely. He has won us a couple of games this year and his 3 ball was slightly better than advertised (40% on the year), though on low volume due to low/fluctuating minutes.
Vern has a solid offensive game but he is a defensive liability. He was given a few starts last year but our mentally challenged coach benched him after 5 minutes and he didn't play for the rest of the game each time. He has also done the same thing to Nick Richards at times. I don't see how that can do anything other than destroy a player's confidence.
He was given very little chance in CHA though so there might be a (very) small chance he breaks out with some opportunity. I wouldn't bet on it though. He usually put up decent stats in the G League but the Swarm lost a lot of games when he played - not neccesarily blaming him as it is a team sport but I'm trying to say he didn't seem to impact winning much at G League level when putting up stats.
You've got him for 2.5 more years under contract for less than $2 million per year so pretty much zero risk.

He'll have fun with Isaiah Todd and the Capital City GO-GO probably.

Harrell is about to be an unrestricted free agent. If we want to retain him next year, we can still sign him in the offseason. But there was absolutely no reason to keep him. All he would do is help us win meaningless games in March and April and hurt our draft position. Heck, if we weren't able to trade him for a 2nd, I honestly would have released him. That's how important it was to get him off the team.
Far being "a garbage trade," this was a terrific trade.
I like Trez a lot. But he had no future with us. Obviously he also had no present value; he wasn't helping us do anything this season. Plus, b/c he's expiring, he also had little trade value.
Given that we traded both Dinwiddie & Holiday, we obviously needed a PG -- I'd have taken Ish straight up for Trez under the circumstances. That we also got a R2 pick plus a guy who was probably the best Center in college basketball 2 years ago -- & hasn't even turned 21 yet! -- I'd say this was a fantastic move.
Does it make us better tomorrow? No. But, it is a solid rebuilding move. I'm impressed to tell the truth.
This is where I am as well. We swapped an asset we would lose in the offseason and got a useful vet, a young cheap prospect, and a pick.
Also we help Ish once again to become the world record holder in trades per career. If I recall correctly he edges Trevor Ariza with this trade.
That and I'm happy for Trez. That team is going to be fun to watch with his energy added to a squad that already plays fired up. No defense but pedal to the metal on offense.

So can we waive ish. I know we need guards but I'd rather not watch that again.

Slanderous. Ish gonna shock the world here. With Neto, they are thunder and lightening.
Can't say I do. Who else gonna shoot?

Ish is at least a competent NBA PG with a very good handle (and unselfish). He'll help our young players. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if we kept him next year as a backup PG.

Its top 45 protected, but looks like that wont be an issue. Looks like it will convey into the 47-49th pick

This is a great move. We needed a "Tank Commander" and Ish is the man for the job.
I just hope VCJr doesn't take minutes away from Gill.

Seconded on that front. We need a veteran to mentor any young PG we get, and to motivate our young bigs/get them into the action. Ish does that well, he knows his role.
Ish played well with Gafford last year. And Rui.
Gafford put up solid +/- numbers with everybody on the squad last year, but still he and Ish were one of his better 2-man combinations, accounting for +5.4pts/100 possessions. (Behind only Westbrook, Bertans, and Beal).

And with Rui, in their 270 minutes together they were +7pts/100 possessions. In fact of the top 10 (minutes played) two-man line-ups that Rui played in, Ish was the ONLY player next to whom Rui had a positive +/-.

Hell, look at Ish in his 3-man line-ups. Last year dude did not post a negative total in any of his top 10 three-player combinations. It's pretty remarkable.

Ish was not the problem last year.

Being defensively challenged won't hurt Carey here.
Good to have Ish back.
