WOJ: Harden, Millsap for Simmons, Curry, Drummons, Two #1's

My thoughts on the trade: It was inevitable. I think there was for sure some tampering on the Sixers side. Provable? Probably not but keeping Harden was not going to increase the odds of getting a chip this year. I think the unraveling started last year and it was multi factorial. There was Nash overplaying our stars, injuries, questionable commitment right out of the gate. The problem in the end was not just injuries but the realization we were never going to see our stars play together enough to build what’s needed to win it all. I think the trade itself at least puts a halt to that downward spiral. It forces a change. Marks has to look at a longer term window now and Iam sure he is. There’s a chance the mandate lifts but the threat of a new variant likely keeps it in place in the short term. I think Kyrie can play part time with Durant, he’s ok with that. The problem was Harden. In the longer term the team will be more balanced and with a couple trades that secure 3-D players the team will be scary, like really scary again. Simmons will be great in the Draymond role. The pace will be fast and shooters can run their routes with the gravity of 2 stars getting them open. He will also anchor a new defensive identity with his all NBA pedigree, just need a couple more pieces. A player like John Collins in the summer would be huge.

I don't blame Harden for wanting out because of Kyrie and Nash. But it sucks that things went south with everyone else too based on how Patty and Blake have reacted.

Oh well. I think the Nets are now in a better position if we can get Kyrie to full time status, Joe Harris back and Ben can get back to hitting FTs in the 60 percent range.

But if there is some truth it and Morey was that desperate to get a deal done, I don’t know how Marks doesn’t take advantage of it and at least get Thybulle included. Oh well, that’s water under the bridge now…

I do not trust anything put out by the media. Houston also dropped a ton of hit articles on Harden after he came to the Nets. Considering the source is from Woj who was owned by Windhorst ffs this year and who still said there was no negotiation between the two teams 12 hrs before the trade deadline, I'd put a big question mark over it's credibility.

Anyways, I am just trying to figure out what happened. They were genuinely happy in that Bulls game. Things went down quickly after that.( I think it's to do with the post game when Harden said" I will give him a shot myself". Then Kyrie said he won't take the shot. Harden crossed the line I think. Their relationship since then went down the toilet. I think KD hurting at the wrong time did not help too.

Just a Sixers fan popping in to read y’all’s reaction to the deal. I think it’s a win-win (although I do like it more for Philly but we’ll see). I think there’s a chance that it works great for both teams but also risks that it blows up in everyone’s face given the personalities involved.

But mostly, I hope we play each other in the playoffs every year for the next 3-4 seasons. The fireworks and drama will be can’t miss tv.

I see it similarly. I saw someone say that the best thing the nets accomplished was diversifying and I agree with that entirely. they didn't need to open a championship window they needed to reinforce the one already open and make it a little less volatile. I think it's a big win for the nets to add 2 years of Curry and 4 of Simmons, plus whatever they do with the picks, but i'd also agree it's hard for it to not be a bigger win for a team that probably went from not having a championship window to having one now.

i do think there are valid concerns re: what harden is at this point. last year he was intentionally out of shape and still looked a lot better than he has at any time this year. beyond the nets situation he has clearly been frustrated with how the game is getting called now and his lack of FT. but for Embiid the time is now and you would think there will be a honeymoon period where Harden is on his best behavior like he was with the nets last year.

I have no problem with us trading Harden, especially given his current form. And I agree that there certainly are benefits to having a more balanced team. However, if Harden wins a title with Philly, it’ll be a terrible look for Marks. He’s turned a division rival into a firm contender. He better pray it doesn’t work out for Philly.

not sure i agree. it would have been a hell of a bigger screw up if Harden declined his option and left for nothing or a lot less than they got. or if he was prepared to go even more awol tanking the season.

we can question whether it was wise to make the harden deal in the first place (either argument is fair).
we can also debate Simmons + Curry + picks vs. Allen + Levert + more picks (again either argument is fair).

i don't think anyone can argue that Harden created 2 ridiculous situations the nets had to contend with - demanding for trades to and from in the span of 13 months while under contract.

I don't think Philly win a championship with Harden and Embiid. I think it's more likely that the Clippers get frustrated with Harden launching 3s and some problems arise in the battle to be team leader between Embiid and Harden.

I also think Simmons will fit really well with Irving and Durant. He's low usage was a problem on Philly as the guys with FGA more than him were collectively taking 48 FGA per game, whereas on the Nets it will be 70 FGA per game (without considering Harris). That takes a lot more pressure off him. Plus the spacing is far better for him. I have Nets as favourite this year.

Nets are in free fall at the moment, with the status of multiple key players uncertain (Simmons, Kyrie, KD, Joe). That's before adding the fact that we have an unbalanced roster with too many center options (yet none of those options ideal for starting next to Simmons), and a lack of quality starting guard next to Kyrie (Seth & Patty too undersized in that backcourt, Joe probably better but still a sluggish defender, and who knows if he even returns this season). I have very low expectations this season, there's a slim chance that everything goes right for us post all star break (we get everyone back, mandate is dropped), but odds are against us for this season.

For me who wins the trade will come down to if Harden can go back to the player he was last year. Or close to it.

If he can then the Sixers won the trade massively. If he stays the same Harden we have now then I would just rather have a defensive monster in Simmons. As long as he can get in the right mental space.

We probably cannot win past the 2nd round without a full time Kyrie. But next year we have a very good shot.

Especially if we convert the two first rounders into assets.

Agreed. Dealing Harden to a division rival to make them a certified contender (at least, on paper) is a very bold and risky. Philly cannot win these next two years or it’s a major indictment of the Nets players, coaching staff, and upper management.
