Kevin Broom was right (again) !
He did tell me years ago, when EG was 5 or ten years as GM, "Ken, Tommy Sheppard is a smart guy. He knows what he's doing".
And to think I had doubts...
Hes only been GM a few short months and in that time he has done a **** incredible job.

Re: Kevin Broom was right (again) !
He is great at fixing his mistakes. To visually explain it....
Offseason until trade deadline looked liked this: 0-1 = -1
Trade Deadline(where we are now): -1 + 1 = 0

Jury still out. Right now he's great at fixing his mistakes without giving up value. Unlike EG who had to sell the farm to fix his. If he gives Beal the max, he's just as lousy. Although I put that more on Ted.

Right. I think saying Sheppard is great or bad is a bit early. However, if we had to decide at this moment, I don't see how anyone can say that he is good or great. His draft picks haven't performed as of yet. He has only corrected his mistakes with trades/free-agent signings. I think the Wall for Westbrook trade was a net positive but then the trade for Aaron Holiday was a net negative, considering what we got in return when Holiday left. The vision of this team is anything but clear.
Come this summer we can start saying if he is a good GM or not. By then we will find out the true upside of Kispert, Avdija, and Hachimura considering all three should be getting plenty of burn for the rest of the year. We will also see what he does with Beal and with the upcoming draft.
I will say, if he doesn't trade Beal, for me, he will be labeled a bad GM. No chance this team is a contender with Beal on a large/max contract. I also don't really care if it is him calling the shots or Ted. That is all hearsay and I can only judge him by what the responsibilities of his position are, and that is to manage the personnel on the team.

Key point: given the mess Tommy was handed, it's way too early to draw any definitive conclusions. But, this seems way overstated:

You are way underestimating the Wall for Westbrook trade -- esp. since it really has to be viewed based on the rest of what happened with Westbrook.
We agree about the Holiday trade -- bad when made, worse given the net now. But, come on, it pales in comparison with his having turned the worst contract in the NBA into a bunch of young players & couple of picks.
& you are overstating how bad his picks are. Tho... in truth you leave out some missed opportunities in the draft! So overall I can't give his draft performance anything more than a C, maybe a C-.
That said, Avdija is a terrific young player, & Kispert looks to have been an excellent pick at his spot. Rui is still an open question, although he looks better than he did last year.

There's also no chance that trading Beal will make us a contender. We are a rebuilding team, & Tommy knows it.

I don't think Shepp can trade his way into being a contender until he improves in the draft. He needs quality high upside assets and that's the best way to get them. No combination of our young guys could pull Sabonis or Grant much less anything capable of actually pushing us towards contention.

Who says they couldn't. That's something we do not know, we don't know what the asking price for those guys were and we might have actually had the ammo but Tommy wasn't willing to pay it. Plus in. Year or two deni and Kispert might have massive value. Just give it time. He does need to improve in the draft sure but I don't think he's been awful. Just average.Dat2U wrote:I don't think Shepp can trade his way into being a contender until he improves in the draft. He needs quality high upside assets and that's the best way to get them.
