No NBA Lockout Coming

Post#1 » by floppymoose » Thu Mar 3, 2022 5:11 am

From wiretap:

The MLB is entering a lockout period and the NBPA released a statement in support of their counterparts in baseball.

"Not even close," said Adrian Wojnarowski when asked if the MLB lockout foreshadows potential labor issues in the future for the NBA.

Wojnarowski highlighted how the MLB has an adversarial relationship with its players currently unlike the NBPA in which they have successfully worked through a number of issues.

The NBA and NBPA both want to get a deal done by December 2022 when both sides have a mutual out they can exercise for the 22-23 season.

"They have an interest in not having another lockout," said Ramona Shelburne.

Owners exhibiting weakness - time for the players to get back to the table and ask for a better revenue cut (60/40 in favor of players)

Just kidding - sort of :)

the nbpa and owners need to come up with a trade request solution a holdout solution, get rid of half court fouls to stop the break, shore up guidelines on player mental health. the only way the players can screw this up is by asking for more money or policing fans.

People really think owners care how much power players have

More like GM's care how much power players have.

The owners only care about how much money is going in their pocket, and with all the TV deals signed recently, the owners have every reason to stay hush and collect their dollars.

Well considering how badly Silver and the owners got bent over in the last CBA, not surprising. Did the league get ANY concessions last time around ?

Was there ever a lockout when the players were overpaid?

Why would the players risk it?

NBA is too focused to make Lebron to be the top scorer in NBA history to let this happen.

Of course they care...? Warriors are making significantly more money than Kings because they are successful team in last 10 years. If they were mess of a team they were prior they would be not making nowhere close to money they are now.

Hasn't the BRI split gone from 57/43 in favor of the players to 51/49 in favor of the owners? If so, then that is an absolutely massive win for the owners over the course of the last CBA.

Wasn’t it the other way around, hence the cap jumping 7% and 11% in the 2 years before the unsmoothed TV deal spike of 34% in 2016?

If they don't address even small issues around player movement I will be hugely disappointed.

This actually could not be further from the truth. You must not be aware of this, but the NBA team owners meet a couple of times a year to discuss how the league is run and most of the big ticket topics at those meetings lately have been about star players forcing their way out. Reportedly some of these owners meetings within the last couple of years got pretty adversarial - because many of the owners were upset about the way that star players have been forcing their way out because of the impact that it has on competition.

And sure you could take the super negative mindset that the only reason owners care about the league being competitive is money and they're jealous of the large market teams having the luxury of stars trying to force their way there because that can in some situations result in the team being more profitable...

But I couldn't disagree more. NBA owners - despite being billionaires - are still human. There aren't very many NBA owners in my opinion who don't care at all about the success or failure of their basketball team. My team the Blazers have one of the few right now - Jody Allen - who isn't super invested in the team's success and probably just needs to sell it. But we're one of the exceptions. Owners like Jeanie Buss or Mark Cuban or Michael Jordan that are very much invested in the day to day operations of the team are much more common than the detached ownership of my team.

owners will complain about not being able to retain talent but they sure as hell won't shut the league down for it

MLB is so bad. They never fully grasp how much damage they do to their league.

the Kings laugh all the way to the bank with their revenue sharing check from the Warriors while they swallow their giant luxury tax bill. then the Kings get a check for that too

Are we sure Jody is as "detached" as is rumored? I think the larger issue is that we just don't know a whole lot about her.

This.

Probably needs some form of tender system or franchise tag that gets losing team some comp for stars leaving. But that’s not a money issue more than league system/draft capital so doubt it’ll be a difficult negotiation.

Player empowerment even with a signed contract. Harden getting his way to go to a team he wants.
Ben with his questionable mental issues
Kyrie not playing because of his “conviction “
Zion with his inability to control his weight, about to get a mega deal because Pelicans are worried they’ll lose him for nothing.
I’m surprised
