They are usually just way too gin forward. Posting this after seeing a brewery aging one of their pils in a gin barrel and already knowing it'll be trash. I feel like the way forward is mixing 1:20 barrel aged to non to get that slight gin taste without it being a juniper bomb.
I'm not sure I've ever liked a beer that was aged in any sort of liquor barrel.

I second this for wine. It's mostly just cheaper/gimmicky wine in the $10-15 range, but it's all horrible.

Has anyone ever introduced yous twos to your lord and savior bourbon barrel aged beer? There are some bad ones out there though, like anything else.

I've had a few and hated all of them....so much so that I don't have any desire to find a good one if such a thing exists.
only a fan, only an opinion

If you are looking for an amazing bottle of wine $13 or less (our local grocery store has it for $10 non-stop) - Zac Brown Red Blend. I was skeptical of it but it's our go-to wine now and everyone that I've had try it now has it as a staple.

I have celiac, so unfortunately not. What beer benefits from vanilla and caramel notes (which is what I presume it imparts)? Stout?

I started working from home and got a pull up bar and some free weights where basically every hour or two, I walk down and do a two min workout to get the blood flowing. I'm in better but not great shape. Tempted to upgrade.

I did quite a bit of research on the thing before buying including to talking to some people who has used it, as it is expensive. Everyone I've talked to or read from in their online community (they have a huge FB community) have been saying how amazing it is. The main selling point behind it is that it automatically increases your weight based on how it senses you are performing. It's magnetic weight, which from what I've read feels like 1.3 times normal weight (no gravity assistance in the lifts), so the thing has a max lifting capacity of 260 pounds, which is great for pretty much anything but heavier squats/deadlifts/etc.

The analytics on this thing also look amazing - tracks time under tension, strength score by body section (upper, lower, core) and a ton else. I'm really excited about it.

Mine just shipped today so should have it installed by end of March. I'll try and give a review after that.

Probably stouts and porters. I've had a few vanilla porters and they're not necessarily my favorite but occassionally they hit the spot during a cold weather stretch.

Got a pretty good deal on a nice BNB for when I'll be there later this week and want to know what I should be expecting from the neighborhood I'm in. Google Street view makes it look pretty nice and there's a $1 taco place a block away so that's already a big W in my book.

Been lurking forever and rarely post but I love that neighborhood so this is a good excuse to come out of the shadows 8-). Moved from WI to East Austin about 3.5 years ago. It's a good area, tons of stuff within walking distance. Easy to hop on a bike/scooter if you venture a little further. If you want some recs:
- Veracruz - migas tacos
- Grannys - migas and chilaquiles tacos
- Tamale house - the migas and queso is my favorite food that i've had in austin so far
- Mickelthwait - bbq without the wait. Franklin is great but the line is nonsense
- Brew & Brew - good spot to work while drinking coffee and/or beer
- Nickel City - Buffalo bar that feels more like a midwest bar than most places around here, food is solid and drinks are good
- Kitty Cohen - great for cocktails when it's nice and sunny
- Kinda Tropical - solid food and drinks and good outdoor vibes
- Zilker and Lazarus are decent breweries. Zilker usually has a fried chicken truck that's decent.
- Scoot Inn and Hotel Vegas are fun music venues. The White Horse has live country music and two stepping.
- The river is nearby and has a nice little walk/bike trail. You can also rent a paddleboard/kayak, though that's more fun down by zilker park/barton springs

There's tons of other good spots in the area and tons to do, hope this helps and hope ya have a good time visiting!

Thanks for that list, exactly what I was looking for. You're the 2nd person to suggest Nickle City - the bar I usually go to (Station6) highly recommended that place and its only a mile from my bnb. Thank you!

Good call on Kinda Tropical, was a good time. Going to hit Nickle City and everything on 6th street tonight. Eastcider and Friends & Allies was also a really fun. Weather has been perfect for me so far.

Yes stouts mainly of the imperial variety. If you want to see some hilarious stuff check out the price on some quality bourbon barrel stouts on the black market.

One day last year I was visiting a friend in a small town and my eye caught a sign "Chromexcel", that's easily the best boot leather in the world in my opinion. That was enough to get me through the door, and from there I was sold. One man operation housed in an old shop, beautiful smell of leather, old boot making machines. I had no idea how boots are made but the guy walked me through everything, I picked chromexcel exterior, kangaroo interior, layers and layers of veg tan for the soles, Daynite outsoles and a custom design based on an old Czech army boot with goodyear welts.

Then he took a bunch of measurements and found a hardwood last that roughly matched my foot and started gluing strips of thin leather on it until he was confident he had the shape and size just right. Days later I went by for a fitting and he had made one boot out of cheaper leather, with soles, laces and everything, just for me to try it on and then he was gonna throw it away. I was blown away that this is what he had to do to make a pair of boots, I actually kept it as a souvenir:

And then one day finally my boots were ready:

Was it cheap? God no. Nothing cheap or fast about the whole thing. I still cringe a bit thinking how much I paid, but I'm not regretting it. I know how chromexcel ages and I absolutely love it, and I know how these boots are made and I have no doubt they will last a lifetime, just change soles and laces every few years.

You can find boots made like that, Nicks Boots comes to mind, but man, it's a different experience wearing something that is exactly cut to your foot... easily the most comfortable footwear I've ever owned. If you can swing it I highly recommend finding a local boot maker in your area and having a pair made, do it once in your lifetime. Great experience, great product, keep the craft alive.

Shout out to James Roberts of Reboot Supply in Kyneton, Victoria, Australia.

This is now on my bucket list (to have an old man make me a pair of custom boots).

Kyneton isn't heaps far from me, though pretty sure it's miles for you!

What ballpark figure are we talking dollar wise? Like how much will my wife kill me?

Bacchus Marsh. So like 50 mins. That cost is fair, but a bit out of my price range at this point of my life. Hopefully soon.

yeah it was probably a once in a lifetime kind of thing for me too, although you do save some of that money by not buying crappy boots along the way...
