How many seasons will it take for Mobley to be MVP level?
How many seasons it will take for Evan Mobley to be a serious MVP candidate? Do you project he will ever win MVP in his career?

I don't think he will ever be MVP.

He's a primarily defensive player, almost no chance he gets an MVP.

Do you mean to say that you think mainly defensive players don't reach the impact level of the best players in the league or that you don't think they are popular enough to get MVP votes? Or might you mean the latter while also agreeing with the former?

Right now both are true

Answer me this question: How many seasons will it take for Cleveland to win the NBA title (or at least have one of the best RS records in the league) without adding a player better than Mobley? The answer will be roughly the same.

Way too early to characterize him that way imo. Giannis didn't become a good offensive player until he was 22. Let's see how Mobley looks at 22-23 before we try to say his impact is mostly just on the defensive end.

Didn't really show out in the playoffs.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

And yet, Cleveland won the minutes Mobley played [+2.1 On-Court per 100] and were crushed without him [-25.5 without him].
Identical numbers to 2004 KG

Well, that's good at least.

2023 Cleveland were tied for the 5th best record and had the 2nd best SRS

He has way to far to go offensively for any reasonable projection. But if he has to be KG in order to be that level of effective, then I don't think he ever gets there. He's not the athlete KG was and lacks the offensive base that KG seemed to have at this time. I also don't put any stock in the Cavs developing him fwiw.

Re: How many seasons will it take for Mobley to be MVP level?
Bit early to be worrying about that. Right now, he's a 16/9 defensive guy. That's not the profile of an MVP. If Deke and Big Ben never won one, it's unlikely that Mobley will without a shocking change in his offensive ability.
He's 21, he just finished his second season, the book surely isn't closed on his development, but he doesn't strike me as the type of player who is going to be That Guy for a team.

Re: How many seasons will it take for Mobley to be MVP level?
He's only 21 years old. Saying "he never will be", while i'm sure it could serve as a well-educated guess, is just too quick & disingenuous towards writing him off. With this in mind, he is going to have to work on his offensive game quite significantly to be on an MVP level of play consistently - implying this might be more of a long-run possibility than one panning out in the foreseeable future / next seasons to come.
Even with the Cavs situation being somewhat flawed and that being brought to light against Thibs and Co, Mobley's offensive production was quite underwhelming. It happens, and I'm holding out hope Mobley comes back a better offensive player from this experience. How great a defender he is still makes Mobley the best player in the 2021 draft class for now, as well.

Is why I used the word "unlikely" instead of "never."

Right, but consider MVP competition. He'd have to be CONSIDERABLY better on offense in order to merit MVP consideration. It's not like he's had a couple of down years, his FT% maps to his college days and his shooting ability isn't really there.
He moves well without the ball in transition and around dribble penetration. That's great, that's going to serve him well. He's an okay offensive rebounder. He can make a quick move off a catch deep in the post, and he finishes strong. He does a pretty decent DHO. We've seen him triple-threat and hit stepbacks. His handle is actually pretty shockingly good; probably not shocking to someone who watches him all the time, of course, but you know what I mean. He's got pretty good control for a guy his size. If he ever adds any kind of consistency and efficiency to his jumper, that'd open things up a lot for him in terms of his potential. Like I said, he's young, so we'll see. I can see why scouts looked at him, but projecting MVP off of what we've seen is still a little early for me. Would be nice if he had a reliable 17-footer and he could do a little more facing up, but I guess he'd have to have more opportunities to do so, and it isn't like the Cavs are really looking for another 20 ppg scorer at the moment.
