Is Center once again the strongest position in the league?

Post#1 » by Lou Fan » Mon Mar 7, 2022 8:46 pm

With Jokic, Embiid, and Giannis being clear top 4 players along with Curry and the center position having some good depth at the top level with Bam, Gobert, Allen, Ayton, Towns and Vuc all playing at a high level plus Draymond and Sabonis if you consider them centers. Is the reign of the big man back in the NBA?

PG: Curry, Morant
SG: Harden, Derozan
SF: Durant, Tatum
PF: Giannis, LeBron
C: Jokic, Embiid

I'd say the forwards and centers are evenly the strongest. The weakest today is probably guards with the declines of Curry/Harden and Dame.

PGs: Luka/Ja/Curry/Trae/CP3/Hardend/Dame/Lamelo/SGA/Kyrie/Simmons/Garland/Murray
Other positions you will see a big drop after 4 names.

I think Giannis is clearly playing Center at this point. Even when Lopez is in it's debatable but with Portis he's clearly the center on both ends imo.

probably, also because i consider giannis a big so the 3 best players in the league right now are bigs + gobert/draymond as very arguable top 10 (imo they both are)

I don’t think either of those 2 have a case, I would say PG is definitely the strongest/deepest position in the league currently.

they are the best defensive players of this era with decent (not star but not zeroes) offensive impact through passing (dray) or roll man game and finishing/offensive rebounding (gobert)

they have a clear case

In top end talent? Absolutely - arguably the league's top three players are all centers.

Don't think the position has the same depth as we have for guards - which is perfectly understandable given there is always a relative shortage of people who are 6'10 or taller.

With the Bucks, Portis is the starting center. Giannis is pretty much a postionless type of 7 footer. BUT his primary position is at the PF. When looking at Portis and Giannis in tandem, Portis is the 5 man.

With that said the PG spot IS STILL the strongest position depth wise in the league. BUT between Embid, KAT, and Jokic, we are looking at the three MOST SKILLED centers ever in terms of offense. NOT SAYING the best peak-prime wise. Just talking about scoring skillset, handles, and passing ability as a package.

Giannis
Jokic
Embiid
Durant
Curry
Lebron
AD
Harden
Luka
Morant

No case over those players, could probably throw in a couple more before getting to the likes of Green/Gobert.

AD has literally played more games than Draymond this season lol, you can replace AD with Derozen and they both still have zero argument for top 10.

Davis has been far from great on average in 2022 even when he played, i have had the misfortune of following lakers season so i would know lol

and derozan while awesome this year i still wouldnt pick him for sure over draymond and gobert but i guess i am in the minority there

i prefer defensive superstars over second tier offense stars

SF is stacked as well - Lebron, Durant, Kawhi, PG, Butler

If you wanna label Giannis as a Center, then yeah, no other position comes close as far as top-heavy talent. Jokic, Giannis, Embiid, Gobert are perennial All-NBA guys. Then you have guys like KAT, Jarret Allen, Bam, Ayton who are young, perennial All-Star caliber dudes just entering their prime. And that's not even mentioning guys like Vucevic, Capella, Robert Williams, and Valanciunas, who'd be getting All-Star consideration in a weaker era. League is not only loaded with elite Center talent, but these guys are also incredibly diverse in their skill sets.

Curry is not a top 4 player this season

Disagree in fact his argument for higher than 4 is a lot stronger than lower imo. Personally, I have him 3.
