Lots of talk about the Niners possibly pursuing Stephon Gilmore. I get that he seems like a great fit because he's a very good (probably no longer elite) vet at arguably our biggest position of need, but I've gotta say, I can't see it.

Gilmore's biggest strength - and the thing that gives him the most not-insignificant value - is his ability to play man. I know we play a fair bit of man on third down, but we significantly more zone than man, and I don't know how much value a primary man corner has in our scheme, at least relative to the value that player would have in a man-heavy scheme. I'd rather look for a cheaper player who excels in zone but would also be an upgrade in man.

My official “must draft” for the 49ers is Calvin Austin III, he multiple needs that we have and he’s electric. Should be a mid round pick.

Yeah, he's definitely on my watch list. He brings an element we don't have, and could be available in round four or even later given that he's tiny and it's a deep receiver class.

Yep! He’s exactly what we need. A return man who happens to be a blazer so he can go deep every so often

Just caught a Grant Cohn bit that may have the answer to this question. Apparently the PS receiver who caught those balls (guy from Stanford) posted them to his Instagram story or something like that. Not engineered by the team, as some speculated. Ha!

Pickett came in with 8 1/2" hands. Really small, and he's had some fumbling issues, and issues with the weather at the Senior Bowl. Only posting it here as he's in the discussion for first QB taken, and this hurts his stock (and thus maybe bumps Garoppolo's value).

Lynch on Aaron Banks:

“I think there’s this narrative that because Aaron didn’t play, there must be something wrong with him,” 49ers general manager John Lynch said at the NFL Scouting Combine. “Quite the contrary.

“I think he really grew. He really reshaped his body, and we’re really excited about getting him out there and letting him compete."

So here's the thing, John: if you use the 48th pick of the draft on an interior OL, that player plays five snaps despite the RG struggling mightily at times, and is entering season to getting out there and competing, there's something wrong with him. Or the FO royally screwed up the pick.

Banks was the second true guard taken, and he went a half-round before the next interior OL (centers Myers and Humphrey) who went with consecutive picks late in the round and both started significant games for playoff teams (though Myers missed a big chunk of the season with injury). You don't draft a guard who needs to reshape his body with that pick. That's the guy you take in the third or fourth round.

It's absolutely inexcusable that Banks couldn't beat out Brunskill, and there's a strong argument that missing on that pick cost the team a super bowl appearance (particularly because the interior OL many linked to the Niners there was Humphrey, who played at a all-pro level this year). Not to mention that if Banks had replaced Brunskill, Brunskill may very well have been a better choice than Compton at RT, thus improving our two biggest offensive liabilities.

Austin is really small, which will hurt his stock, but he lit up the combine. 4.32 40, 39" vertical, 11'3" vert, 4.07 shuttle. In terms of the WRs at the combine, he was third, third, second, and first respectively. Not sure he gets out of the second round when you combine those numbers with his Senior Bowl performance. The saving grace is that this was a really fast WR group, so those measurables may not move Austin all that much - though a lot of those initially reported times changed pretty dramatically. Chris Olave lost 0.13 seconds off his reported time, which is crazy.

Feel like I'm picking on the guy a little bit, but couldn't help but think about Banks while reading this:

Read on Twitter

Banks' shuttle: 4.92 (at his pro day, which likely means it's a little faster than a combine score). 23rd percentile. And we took him as the second interior OL.

49ers expected to hire Brian Griese as QB coach.

No previous coaching experience, so guess he'll be learning on the job than necessarily coaching up Trey.

Yeah, it's an odd pick given that we have a particularly green QB. Not saying Griese doesn't have it in him to be a very good QB coach, but he hasn't shown that he can be to date.

I'd like to have seen a QB coach with more coaching experience or in this case actual coaching experience but on the flip side most of the nitty-gritty mechanical stuff for QBs is done in the offseason by all the specialists they go see and during the season it's more of the mental area. QB coaches these days seem more assistant offensive coordinators and helping QBs than guys that spend hours hammering in fundamentals and mechanics on the QBs they coach.

Griese does at least have a lot of experience working with the Shananhans so I could understand that being a quality that could help Trey because he can use his own experience playing QB in that system and relate it to Trey.

Still is an unknown but I'll give Shanahan the benefit of the doubt since the coaches have usually developed and been productive coaches.

Christian Kirk is apparently going to be a free agent, the Cards haven't extended him.

77 receptions out of 103 targets, 982 yards, 5 TDs. Not bad, but wasn't some on here really touting him in his draft class?

Short so maybe more of a slot WR?

I don't necessarily see an issue with any Olineman sitting for a year but I tend to discount Lynch's glowing assessment of Banks. He seems to talk up players quite a bit that end up going nowhere. So I take his assessments including Lance with a grain of salt.

Not worried much. Bill Walsh could have hired Jack in the Box as his QB coach and the 49ers QBs were going to be successful because Walsh knew what to expect from his coaches and his Qbs. Walsh would let his coaches coach but he always had an eye on what was going on with his QBs. I remember a story from Holmgren when Walsh would yell from beyond to do something over again becaus it was not good enough. If Shanahan is really the kind of coach that gets best out of QBs than it shouldn't matter too much,

IMO, it's a huge issue if the second OG drafted doesn't sniff the starting lineup as a rookie. Particularly when you have a player at that position who is a weak link. Certain guys need to start right away, and the second OG taken is one of those guys. That's the expectation.

Seattle cuts LB Bobby Wagner. Truly an end of an era up in the PNW. There's already whispers that Tyler Lockett wants out. If it hasn't been done already, someone will call about DK.

Skip to about the 37-minute mark for the Lance talk.

Pretty interesting talk with an NDSU insider and thought it amusing how he thought like we all thought when it came to Shanahan's playcalling. Not to mention hearing from him is much better compared to a bunch of media talking heads that barely follow the team or know anything about the team.

Gets me excited about Lance and I'm looking forward to next season even with the expected ups and downs that'll come.

Read on Twitter

3DQB is the organization that Tom House is part of along with John Beck.

Almost positive he'll work with Beck but hopefully this means he's working with Tom House too as that to me is excellent news since he's getting top-flight work on his mechanics.

Alot of hype with Lance right now on media and the internet and in some cases it is ridiculous. I hope he is the next Mahomes but I will wait and temper the excitement

Commanders traded for Wentz. Ugh. That sucks. I had them pegged as the best landing spot for Garoppolo.

Apparently still a market for Jimmy, but some of those win-now teams have fallen off the list - though Indy is arguably more win-now than anyone and they now have a hole at QB. Somewhat tough to see Indy wanting to give up too much for Jimmy after what they gave up for Wentz last year, but they've got some extra picks following the Wentz trade, so we'll see.

At this point I’m willing to give Jimmy up for anything just to get hid of his contract. Clearly the market for him wasn’t very robust.
