Could Franz be our Starting SG next season?

Post#1 » by cedric76 » Sat Mar 12, 2022 8:22 am

You are what you can guard and Franz can guard SG, he has done well on the defensive end against SG and Sf this year

By moving Franz to the SG position, we would become a matchup nightmare against any team

Fultz (taller and stronger than most PG)/ Suggs
Franz (taller than any SG in this league)
Suggs, Tyus, Jase
Bane, AB, Jett
Franz, TDS,
P5, JI, Panda

That should be one of our main options. Right now its hard to do becouse we have too many combo guards but the roster construction should be better next year. Franz has some similarities to Klay Thompson. He has even higher upside, but the 3 pointer will be crucial.

Why?
He is only SF on roster, same roster that has Cole, Fultz, Suggs, Hampton, Terrence Ross all slotted at PG-SG spot.

He is not Klay Thompson, Klay was smaller and much better spot up shooter, Franz is player that can shoot, but shooting isn't his only strenght nor his shooting is Klay Thompson -level good.
There is no reason to not belive Franz will become +37% three point shooter, but today he is definition of league's average outside shooter ( where Klay entered nba as rookie and was 41,4% three point shooter and over same amount of games Wagner played now, made 23 threes more, on higher percentage).

Franz is versitale player, he should be our SF for at least next 7 years ( hopefully more). Magic are desparete for perimeter shooting and scoring, finding SG who fits need is far more important than play Wagner out of position. And in general it's way easier to find great scoring& shooting SG than SF ( and draft, nor free agency will give Magic such player )

Agree 100%, let him excel and grow 100% in his natural position. This roster has log jams and is pushing players into unnatural positions, it's time to play guys in their right spot and if that means guys go they go

Fultz/Suggs/Anthony*
Harris/Ross/Hampton
Wagner
Okeke
WCJ/Bamba/Wagner

Could play SG as a 6th man scorer

That's where we are at, time to upgrade 2-3 with starters/stars

I think it's absolutely an option. Naturally, I would agree he's a conventional 3. At the same time, 2 and 3 are virtually interchangeable these days (and, depending on matchup, 4). His best performances earlier in the year - you could argue he was playing at 1. Height is an advantage unless you can't move your feet to defend shorter guys...I believe he can. If we draft Jabari - either of them could be at 2/3 due to their defensive ability (despite their heights).

No matter who we draft, he's a starter somewhere...I have no doubt he can move around as needed without even changing his game significantly. If he comes back next year with a consistent 3pt shot, he'll be a real threat to any in the league. He's our best player in his rookie season but there's no need to draft around him...that's an awesome opportunity, assuming our FO doesn't get caught up in meaningless semantics about positions (like we do here)...it's complementary skills and defensive ability - period. If you have gaping holes in either category, it won't work. Look at TOR. Look at GSW. Look at MIL (without Lopez). Totally unconventional lineups that work unless you face that extremely rare throwback like Embiid who can impose their will.

Franz would be able to dominate other shooting guards.

He's a little too tall. It would be a lot of work to defend some SGs. Someone else on our team I've been thinking about that could be pretty damn good at SF is Chuma. Great shooter(lately), a little smaller and laterally quicker to help him guard the smaller SGS in the league.

Wagner was 38,4% shooter in Germany before his growth spurt. He also had quicker release than Thompson. Growing so much changed his mechanics but he can still get there. I am not advocating for full time at the 2, but it seems a better idea than 3 guard lineups.
Wagner is not quicker than 3s, he is also not stronger than 3s.... but he is much bigger than 2s. Thats his advantage.

I think you can experiment with Franz at the 2, play him in spurts but I really think he’s a true blue 3. I can see him perhaps playing a Turkoglu type of role here as far as being a jack of all trades offensive weapon. We really need a conventional 2. Weltman really needs to achieve some more positional clarity this off season, especially with the guards, we’ve got way too many guys who aren’t really definable. I honestly think we need to trade Cole Anthony while he’s valuable for a conventional 2. I don’t think Franz is a full time answer there.
You look confused...let me fill you in.

It's a novel idea. It can definitely work depending on matchups.

I wouldn't do it unless out of necessity akin to when we started Grant Hill at SG.

I think franz could play sg if needed but we finally got a solid sf. I agree too many combo guards fighting for minutes at the 1 and 2. I still like Cole and Ross coming off the bench. I also see no reason to give up on hampton. He's still on a cheap deal and has the height to be that end of the bench 1,2, or 3 kinda like we used mcw. Biggest thing is to see if fultz and Suggs can coexist as the starting back court of the future. That's what we have them for. Many here already believe it will never work but we kinda have to give it a go. If it doesn't work out the pair should lead us on another tank next year and a battle to see which one is the point guard of the future. I think that's the priority over moving franz around.

Not full time but just to experiment and depending on who is on the court going into the future.

My thing is seeing if Suggs and Fultz can play together first or at least play enough together that they wouldn't be a negative I'd be sold for the moment. I really believe in this back-court pairing for the moment. Just hopping Both can develop reliable jumpshots which I think they can given both of their work ethic.

If we got Jabari Smith in the draft I can totally see a line up with a pg (Fultz/Suggs) playing with Franz, Jabari, Jon, and Wendell. Would be very intriguing to see that work.

Such predictable thread on a team struggling to find direction. We finally got a good talent in draft and it is about damn time we give this young man defined role and purpose by surrounding him with actual talent capable of winning games. At this moment he is only starter on this whole roster and we need to reshape our team in offseason with goal to be in playoffs next year.
