Re: 2022 Offseason thread
Just realized the Ward signing could make things very confusing next year in the secondary. It is not out of the question that we could be starting Jimmie Ward, Charvarius Ward, and Tarvarius Moore. That's not confusing or anything.

I'd be surprised if Moore was on the team at the start of the season.

Since Charlie Finley once asked Vida Blue to change his first name to 'True' (Vida declined to do so), maybe Jed can just ask Jimmie or Charvarius to change their last name from 'Ward' to 'Ford'. That should work since we don't have anyone named Ford that actually suits up and plays in an actual game for us....

Re: 2022 Offseason thread
These new reports on Jimmy aren’t at all promising. They are making it sound like there isn’t a trade market for him at all.
I honestly don’t know why I’m surprised, the guy is extremely mediocre when healthy and he just had surgery. I’m fine with just cutting him and moving on.

Re: 2022 Offseason thread
The Ward signing provides some intrigue and some upside at a position that was a HUGE liability. Its also nice to see this regime prioritize the CB position for pretty much the first time.
But man, its almost like this regime couldn't care less about ball skills when it comes to DB's. Ward has nice size and cover ability, but he's just another dude that doesn't play the ball very well.

Re: 2022 Offseason thread
Losing Laken is a big blow, as of now the O-line for next year looks concerning to say the least. They also have basically no promising youth in that room. Banks and Moore need to do more, a helluva lot more, before I consider them to be intriguing long term options.
DJ Jones' departure is also a blow. While D Line was the deepest position group on the team, Jones was a very solid contributor. He'll be missed, but that was too much $ to match for this team.

Based on everything I've read so far, it looks like JG would already be traded if the 49ers FO was willing to drop their compensation demands for JG. They have already talked to multiple teams and reportedly were offered a second round pick. There are also reports that the 49ers FO wants two second round picks and are willing to hold out till training camp. Now that may just be a grandstanding but as time goes on they will have less leverage. Not sure what their game plan
I read that rumor about the team receiving a 2nd round pick that they are "mulling over" as they allegedly wanted two 2nd round picks. That doesn't seem believable; if we actually had an offer like that then Lynch should have pounced on it so fast that it would have created an earthquake. At this stage, we are going to be lucky to get a day three pick.
IDK what Lynch would do. I think a second rounder would have been fine. Even to decent 3rds would have been ok.

Yeah, going to be a fascinating few hours. I don't see how they keep him into tomorrow. They're WAY over the cap with him on the roster. Just feels like they messed it up. I can't believe no one would give up anything for a guy who has had as much success as Garoppolo has, even if he's not the driver of the offense.

Baker Mayfield and the Browns will work to find out a trade partner, per PFN.
Another QB into the carousel, this is wild.

Baker wrote a goodbye post to Cleveland. This is the most bizarre offseason of all time.

It's not clear he wasn't jumping the gun. Seemed like he read into the Watson interview and penned a goodbye note, but it's not at all clear that Watson is going to Cleveland at this stage.

$4 million to keep Al-Shaair at the second-round tender. This team sure is acting like they're about to get a bunch of cap release. We shall see....

There is a market. It is just the 49ers want more than teams are willing to give up

Re: 2022 Offseason thread
Is it possible Garoppolo is in play for Cleveland? Stefanski runs a similar system, they just picked up Amari Cooper, and it's a team that sees themselves as ready made for a vet to step in.

It was reported that Cleveland has offered 3 first rounders for Watson. I don’t think he’s jumping the gun at at all. He completely turned raised that franchise from the trash heap and they show complete disloyalty as a result. If I were him I’d want out too.

Off-field stuff aside, Deshaun Watson is arguably a top-5 QB in this league. It makes sense for teams that aren't set at QB to be looking into him, and Mayfield hasn't been nearly good enough to make the Browns feel like they are set at the position. And it certainly appears that Cleveland is making a real push for Watson, but there are numerous parties who also have a say. We'll see. Honestly, Cleveland is a lot more set at QB than some of the other teams that could get him, and they're in the AFC, so I'd love to see him go there. But until ink is on paper, we'll have to wait and see.

Yeah, I'd forgotten that Ward's contract, and the other FA signings/re-signings don't count toward the cap until after the cut-off time. So we'll be under the cap for a solid couple hours. We still can't afford to keep Garoppolo into next season.
I am not at all crazy about this. Now, maybe we just need to wait to see where Watson goes, and then we move Garoppolo shortly after that. But kicking salary cap down the road is almost always a mistake. And sure, if we do trade Garoppolo, we can hypothetically roll over a big chunk of that cap into next year, or use it to extend Deebo and front-load his contract a bit. But it's hard to have available money sitting around and not use it. And this FO has mismanaged its finances horribly before, blowing the substantial cap space they inherited on a string of FAs misses, and thus losing an elite homegrown talent in Buckner.
If we aren't able to extend Deebo and Bosa because of these games we're playing with Garoppolo, it will be pretty devastating for this franchise.

Re: 2022 Offseason thread
Would work on bringing Key back and getting a nose/A-gap type vet as well.
There is expected to be another 18-20M jump in the cap for next year because of the new TV money coming in and they want to officially catch up due to COVID. They are still about 10-12M behind on the cap.

Re: 2022 Offseason thread
Of course, if Watson goes to Atlanta, Matt Ryan becomes available. Add another QB to the mix.
