I see the rationalizing of Washington's terrible moves is already in full effect

The best thing that can be said about losing Sherff is that it's going to ease the pain of those 3rd rounders they traded to the Colts.

Given Washington's inability to make much noise in free agency a 3rd round compensatory pick for Sherff seems likely.

Losing Scherff will hurt, but it never made sense to pay him the average of the top 5 LT's - since he's a guard.

I don't see how they're worse. They essentially switched Scherff and about 10 mil in capspace for Wentz and lost a 4th string defensive lineman. I'd rather have Wentz than Scherf and Trubisky, for example.

We shall see. I’m not bullish on Wentz. Though I don’t mind the draft compensation for him, you have to give something to get something. Where the Commodes got fleeced by the Colts was in not picking up any of his salary. For Indy, this was a salary dump and a purge and we were their lap dogs.

Oh I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with you. It made absolutely no sense to pickup his bonus and give up draft capital to get him. They paid a ridiculous price, and I wouldn't have made the move if I were in charge. At this point, no use crying over spilled milk. The deal is done. But I'm not on the side of people who say Wentz sucks. He's better than anything we have here. T.Y. Hilton was singing his praises on the NFLN yesterday. He is definitely an upgrade.

Carson's deal is only guaranteed for this season.

Basically, if things don't work out this upcoming season he's off the books.

The Commanders will have to pay Wentz for the 2022 NFL season given the structure of his contract, but they are not tied to him beyond this year.

Wentz is under contract for both 2023 and 2024, but he isn't due any guaranteed money those seasons. As such, Washington can cut him without incurring any dead-cap penalties, which occur when a player owed guaranteed money is released or traded by a team.

Seeing as we'll need to replace Scherff, I'd target a guard like Jamaree Salyer as high as the 2nd round - but maybe we could trade down to the 3rd round and still get him - as he's rated only 15th among offensive linemen. He's big and athletic with a much better grade as a pass blocker than as a run blocker. But I think a lot will depend on what their plans are for Saddiq Charles - if they decide he's a guard instead of a tackle - like Ereck Flowers - and how much do they like Schweitzer and Martin.

IDK, not getting a good QB basically meant punting the season.

They overpaid for Wentz but I'm more interested in the season with him by far than without him, or hoping we strike gold with a QB selected in a subpar QB draft.

McKissic did a great job, but they over-relied on him. They need to find a bigger back than can split the RB job with Gibson, imo.

Sheesh, they released Ion and Flowers... I guess that frees up money, but I'd rather have Ion and Flowers - especially after losing a lot of beef on both lines with Settle and Scherff leaving.

And bizarre that McKissic is staying, after all.

I can't say I'm impressed by what they're doing, tbh, but we'll see what they get in free agency. My gut says they're going to be over-paying for lesser players - shocker, right?

Flowers I would have preferred to keep but as for Ion, I sort of understand it.

We're way invested (some would say overly) in the D-line.

But losing both Ion and Settle in the same year takes away all of our DT depth and forces us to rely on re-signing Payne - who couldn't even get along with Allen last season. Seems like we've severely limited our options. We had quality depth at DT and lose them both for nothing... that's really bad, imo.

Perhaps they believe they have someone in-house or can find someone in fa/draft to slot into the rotation.

Maybe, but don't lose assets for nothing. They developed them for nothing.

The Commanders had tried to trade Ioannidis in the past week, a source told ESPN, but with him entering the final year of his contract, they were unsuccessful.
