There is expected to be another 18-20M jump in the cap for next year because of the new TV money coming in and they want to officially catch up due to COVID. They are still about 10-12M behind on the cap.

They did extend Kevin Givens and Maurice Hurst to one-year minimum salary contracts. If healthy (yes, that's a big 'if'), Hurst can provide the nose/interior help that we lost with Jones. His 2019 stats are very comparable to Jones' 2021 stats.

Trent Cannon signs with the Titans. Making it even more important to find a kick returner, ideally who can also serve as a field-stretching speed merchant at WR, in the draft.

Well this adds a wrinkle:

Read on Twitter

So Mayfield may be on his way out regardless. Seems like some team must be willing to trade something for Jimmy....

Both Givens and Hurst are more penetrator types than they type to take on double teams and stuff the run (285 and 292 at the combine, respectively, granted they may have bulked up a bit since then). I'm sure they can do some of that in spot duty, but it doesn't play to either guy's strength. Kinlaw is our best bet, and there are some bigger dudes coming out of college. Pure NT isn't a high value position, so hopefully we can find some value there.

Obviously he's been in the league a long time, and could have completely rebuilt his body, but his combine measurements were interesting:

Great explosiveness and straight-line speed (40 and jumps), AWFUL agility. Doesn't seem like much of a NT type.

Mostert to the Fins. He’s one that I wasn’t interested in anyway

New TV deal is 3X the value of the current one.

So you would think salary cap would go up more than that, eventually if not the first year.

That's what the Packers are gambling on when they gave Rodger his new deal.

Hell by the time Herbert is up for an extension, he may get $60 million or more a year.

Would have loved to have him for that price though.

Money seemed reasonable but it sounds like Mostert wanted to continue his relationship with Mike McDaniel. The price of success where you end up with new coaches that have existing relationships with our players.

Tom Compton signs with the Broncos. He certainly wasn't a world-beater, but that O-line just looks a bit shakier unless you are convinced that Jaylon Moore is the answer.

Yeah, I'd forgotten that Ward's contract, and the other FA signings/re-signings don't count toward the cap until after the cut-off time. So we'll be under the cap for a solid couple hours. We still can't afford to keep Garoppolo into next season.

I am not at all crazy about this. Now, maybe we just need to wait to see where Watson goes, and then we move Garoppolo shortly after that. But kicking salary cap down the road is almost always a mistake. And sure, if we do trade Garoppolo, we can hypothetically roll over a big chunk of that cap into next year, or use it to extend Deebo and front-load his contract a bit. But it's hard to have available money sitting around and not use it. And this FO has mismanaged its finances horribly before, blowing the substantial cap space they inherited on a string of FAs misses, and thus losing an elite homegrown talent in Buckner.

If we aren't able to extend Deebo and Bosa because of these games we're playing with Garoppolo, it will be pretty devastating for this franchise.

As long as it's planned for usually restructures don't hurt a team especially on players they plan to keep anyways. I mean the Saints keep getting in dire straights with the cap and somehow manage to get under it without releasing a single player.

It wasn't mismanagement of the cap that caused us to lose Buckner but the fact the 9ers weren't going to spend top dollar on both Armstead and Buckner as that's a lot of resources to pour into just the interior of the defensive line and after the monster year Bosa had you'd have to pay him top dollar one day as well.

They could've signed Buckner if they wanted but they went the moneyball route and thought Armstead and his cheaper contract along with the rookie you take at 11 would ultimately be more valuable than just Buckner himself. Right now they are definitely losing that gambit unless Kinlaw takes off and starts having a great year.

With Jimmy G it's not going to plan at all. I don't think there is panic or anything with the 9ers but I'm sure they intended to have him shipped off by now. Seems two things threw them off with Jimmy dumping surgery on them and more recently Watson basically becoming tradable. So now they have to wait for Watson to make up his mind and hope the teams that don't land him pivot to Jimmy G because none of those teams are going to move until then.

Long term it's best if Watson ends up with the Browns because he's in the AFC and we don't have to worry about seeing him in the playoffs but that might be one of the worst outcomes when it comes to trading Jimmy because Baker is on the market, Browns wouldn't be in the Jimmy G market, and it might leave you with one suitor left. Watson to the Panthers is probably the best option when it comes to Jimmy because teams value Jimmy more than Darnold so you could be looking at the Saints, Colts, and Browns if they move off Baker.

I don't entirely agree on Buckner. Yes, they could only pick one of Buckner or Armstead. But if you don't think their cap situation played a role in which one they kept, you're kidding yourself. They knew their cap situation wouldn't allow them to match the contract another team would offer him. So they kept the lesser player on a back-loaded contract. And now Armstead is going to be something of an anchor around their necks.

And this is not meant to dump on Armstead. He had a good season, and some extremely good stretches. He's a big part of our playoff run, though he also has a tendency to disappear for stretches, and unfortunately one of those stretches was the NFCCG. Buckner is clearly the superior player, and for the next two seasons, his annual cap hit is about $5 million less than Armstead's. Meanwhile, we pushed almost $7 million of Armstead's contract into a voidable year, and we're going to have to eat that cap hit at some point.

Though honestly, I was thinking a little bit about it yesterday. In some ways, having Jimmy around still may be a good thing because it is restraining their spending right now. They can't dive headfirst into FA while he's still on the roster, so they'll have to target value FAs, which is what they should be doing anyway with so many at least decent players getting cut and the roster in good shape, but not looking at a major SB push this year (unless Lance blows everyone away, in which case one additional high-priced FA probably won't be the difference).

Finally, the FO appears to be making some good choices, letting an OG and DT walk while targeting a CB, then letting the market come to them a bit. It seems too coincidental that they're showing that degree of patience when their ability to spend is restricted (though apparently they were right there in the Chandler Jones sweepstakes, so maybe that's a flawed impression).

Anyway, what's done is done, and they have given themselves a little more time to move off Jimmy and get something in return. Bridgewater went to Miami, so there really aren't any even fringe starting-caliber guys left, unless you count Mariota or an injured Winston. And they've demonstrated to teams that they're willing to eat Jimmy's cap for at least a little longer, so the market may heat up for him again. Let's hope. After the draft, there won't be many teams that both have the cap space to fit Jimmy in and that didn't address QB in the draft (granted maybe with a guy who isn't ready to start).

Browns out of the running for Watson. That's too bad. They were the only AFC team still in the mix. Now it's looking like one of the three NFC South teams. The good news, I guess, is that it looks like Baker may be out in Cleveland, which adds another QB-needy team to the mix. And Baker has some of the same physical limitations as Jimmy, with personality concerns to boot, so you'd think Jimmy would be the preferred player for at least some teams. We shall see....

There is a report that in moving on from Mayfield, the Browns are seeking "an adult" at the QB position. Jimmy may not be the biggest, fastest, or strongest QB, but he does fit the definition of "an adult". Maybe there's a match?

He's gonna have a pretty active market. Pretty skeptical we could add him in our current situation.

Just saw the Bucs got OG Shaq Mason from the Pats for a 5th. Man, we should have been in on that.

Mayfield asking for a trade, relationship is ruined. Browns saying no. Gotta say, he's kind of lending a lot of credence to the whole "adult" story line. Get over yourself, Baker. They took a look at an indisputably better player. It happens.

Man, Rams added Allen Robinson and want to keep OBJ. A four-receiver set of Kupp, Woods, Robinson and OBJ? That would have to be about the best four-man group that's ever taken the field for an NFL team. How do they still have money to spend?

On the positive side, they've lost a starting edge rusher in Miller and CB in Williams, along with their starting LT. Those are three of the highest-value positions, so even with Robinson in the fold and Woods back in the not-too-distant future, they should be weaker than last year.
