This is what Smart does all the time. At times it can be reckless but every team would love their players doing what he does.

And this is coming from someone who hates Smart and the Celtics lol.

Suspension worthy. Hustling for the ball doesn't give you license to take out someone's ankles, that's how injuries happen.

Hustle on #1

Dumb on #2 - he’s putting himself at risk of injury by sticking his leg out like that. If #1 hadn’t happened nobody even mentions #2.

Not dirty but reckless. The Curry one and Lebron one from last year should both be flagrants.

He's a dirty player. The Curry play is debatable because he ended up with the ball, but he dove directly into the legs of Steph pretty clearly. Just because he got his hands on the basketball doesn't make it a basketball play.

That being said, his move on the fast break was worse. He jumped at the pump fake and as he was flying by threw a karate kick at Klay's chest. Ridiculous.

Smart comes with a reputation of being dirty and maybe the most egregious flopper in the league and it's well earned, imo.

(And yes, I know Draymond karake kicked Adams' nuts and Zasa hurt Kawhi but I don't see the Warriors fans defending those plays just like these plays are also indefensible - again, imo).

Melo and amare should thrive in this offense. If Jeremy Tyler and cole Aldridge looked that good in summer league then us knick fans have a lot to be excited about. Make room for all the bandwagoners when we take off

curry one is kinda ok, curry messed up by not going hard for the ball and half-assing it. do or don't, that's how you get hurt.

second one, wth is he even doing. not a basktball play.

Curry one is fine since its a loose ball, the second one is pretty dirty.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the first play.

The second play is weird because the person he’s putting in the most dangerous situation is himself. Also, like if he hadn’t done that, there’s no other contact, it wouldn’t have been a foul. It should probably be a flagrant 1 just to discourage guys kicking their legs out because someone is eventually going to get seriously kicked, but it’s hard to lobby for that too hard when the vast majority of the time it’s the player on offense making dangerous and unnatural leg movements. Draymond on Steven Adams twice still remains the most ridiculous example of this.

I'd classify the Curry like a "player in the air" play. In a vacuum Smart diving on the ball like that is not dirty, but when it happens into players legs its extremely dangerous and that player is very vulnerable like a player in the air. I'm not sure how you'd write a rule to prevent it though.

They're not mutually exclusive.

The Klay one I can see why someone would think that and I wouldnt argue to the death for Smart about it or anything. But the Steph one? Cmon he made a play on the ball on a loose ball. Just awkward angle and Stephs leg got caught up. Didnt look bad at all and he should be back next game.

Only time I've seen Matt Bonner get in a dude's face, and for good reason.
You can't watch this play and tell me he isn't dirty.

The Klay one is debatable since that's a knee to the face, but the Steph one is just hustle. Smart dives on the floor for loose balls EVERY SINGLE GAME. He doesn't do it to take someone's legs out, I can tell you that. Sometimes a leg or foot is unfortunately in the way, and gets tangled up in the heat of the moment.

Doing the dirty work doesn't always equate to dirty plays.

lol come on now. #1 isn't even close. Just hustle. Dude has injured himself diving for balls more than hurting another player. on a 50/50 ball I would be upset if my guy didn't dive for the ball.

The first play was just a play for a loose ball. His back was turned to Curry, and I don't think he was seeking contact. Rather he was trying to shield Curry from the play.

The second play was reckless, as it looked like he kicked at Klay in order to make a defensive play. That should have been a foul and might subjectively be called a flagrant 1 for excessive contact.

Yeah, it was called a flagrant in the game, and rightly so. I don't think there was ill intent on Smart's part, though. Just a wild and reckless play.

Nothing to warrant a suspension.
