SPURS GAME DAY! GAME 72: SPURS VS. PELICANS, 18-3-2022, 7:30PM (CT)

Post#1 » by G R E Y » Fri Mar 18, 2022 8:12 pm

We're are now upon the final home game of this stand which also marks the first of the final dozen games to the regular season. What I hope is that the results take care of themselves by us getting back to our principles - solid D, push in transition, good to great points, and ball protection with a competitive spirit throughout. Really seeing these in this final push is primary. We must re-establish and re-solidify our fundamentals, the basis of our development. Let's show our best.

We're not trusting Primo as anything other than an occasional bail out pass.

Jakob is getting killed by his C counterpart as Jakob is late time and again to the open spots, no hands up to contest. Jakob is used to sagging a ton on Cs but he's getting shredded by a floor stretching big who can and is making 3s and can and is banging down low. Not good D adjustment by Jakob.

And now we're getting beaten to the rebound spots of where their misses are landing and getting second chances and scoring.

This is what happens when the shots aren't falling and we don't hustle on D.

We TO, they get layup.

We TO, they miss floater, get O board, pass to LEFT CORNER - THE BANE OF OUR EXPOSED D EXISTENCE - NOBODY bothers to run out to contest their WIIIIIIIIIIDE open shot for another 3.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE SETTLE FOR OUTSIDE SHOTS, WHEN WE DON'T HUSTLE AFTER THE BALL AND GET BEATEN TO IT ON THEIR MISSES, WHEN WE DON'T PLAY TEAM D. WE'RE GETTING COOKED FROM EVERYWHERE. EVERYWHERE.

WHY?

Because we're not playing a lick of defense.

I feel another 'Fans deserve their money back' comment from Pop...

We have two bigs out there and neither is getting points down low and neither is getting rebounds. Brutal.

1ST Q: SPURS 10

PELICANS 35

Oh dear... *sigh*

Well thanks to Primo's late Q pretty drive for the +1 we hit the double digit mark.

But until then, we allowed a 21-0 run.

We did finish on the Primo make and a TO from full court press, but it's like we're up 25 and not bothering to play well.

Defense: feels like we're frustrated by one or two guys who keep screwing up and then everyone stops playing on D.

We may not get the right rotations, etc., but the lack of hustle after the rebounds is disappointing.

Pop trying to rally the troops on the sidelines as Lonnie was helped off the court... again, he shouldn't be our most animated and focused personnel.

Hope Lonnie is OK.

DJ and Jakob, our best players, did not score.

OH POP... You did SO WELL all season to not get tossed.

But did you see the wink after he got tossed??! Bwahahahahahahaha! He was gunning for it. Got the first tech, got IRATE from it, poor Becky and Mitch trying to hold the rage strength back, and RRAAWR Pop gets the second tech, annnnd the wink lmao

Again, it's a rallying the troops play, but also probably had enough of our bull **** play. Hopefully our guys respond with something of a heartbeat.

2ND Q: SPURS 33

PELICANS 64

Well, we only lost that Q by 4 points, and that's on giving up a 6-0 run to end it.

We're missing an impressive amount of shots from ... everywhere - 12-46(!), 4-22 from 3(!), 5-9FTs(!). Pick your poison. With Lonnie out, our bench has scored 5 points on ONE made FG - ONE single made field goal the ENTIRE half. Holy moly... We also have only one Spur in double figures, Devin, who also happens to be the only starter who has made a 3.

Then we're getting cooked on the O board second chances and putbacks.

We're also not driving nearly enough into them. But that's also a function of DJ getting doubled down low on the left side, as well their help D sneaking up behind him as gets into his pet spin moves at the elbows for contests or outright strips for TOs.

DJ was scouted very well for this game, and he's going right into where the opponents want him to to our detriment. Also to our detriment, DJ is playing the passing around the perimeter just to get it back and then shoot it game, rather than thinking it through and getting to OTHER spots, out of his own comfort zone and more movement, movement, movement, especially of the vertical kind.

We have this Pop retrospective at the half. Kind of awkward timing about all the wins given our performance in the first half.

But our staple of solid man and team D is not there and it's a bitter lesson of what happens when the O isn't clicking. We've shown we can do better on both ends, just have to think and will our way through it.

We've had Qs where we've poured in 40 points and here we are at the 9 minute mark of the 3RD Q still at 39.

3RD Q: SPURS 57

PELICANS 95

Eye-crossing score. We allowed another 30+ point Q. They built up their lead with making only two more 3s so far.

Poor D, a variety of misses, poor rebounding, and here we are. Mercifully, only one more Q to go...
