A high # usually reserved for teams that are considered clear favorites to win a title. The next best team in the NBA will not even win 60 games this year.
Yet I get the impression with the media and fans that the Suns are just barely at the top of a list of teams that could win the title this year...along with the Bucks, Sixers, Nets, Heat, Celtics, and Warriors. Does anyone else find this kind of odd? This was a team that almost won last year and is WAY better this year...with improved play at EVEHypRY position plus adding key frontcourt depth.
Hypothetically, what if the Warriors and Suns switched records? What would the talk be? Or just the Celtics or 76ers even? Is this just the media just doing their usual thing or is there some reason for all this? Just because the Suns have not won a title yet? That seems flimsy.
I don't get that impression at all when I see the Suns discussed on TV. Rather than being dismissed they're just underdiscussed. The reason is obvious. NBA coverage is built around players not teams unlike the NFL or MLB. There are only a few exceptions of teams with large enough fanbases that can command coverage Lakers & Knicks. Celtics to a much lesser degree.
While Booker and crew are respected none of them are currently seen as real MVP level players. Which quite frankly is correct. As such the announcers don't discuss em beyond very vague cliches "those guys really play like a team" or "they came so close last year and want to finish the job this year."
You can't blame the announcers for this. Basketball fans have made clear we are interested in discussing players not teams. A majority of non-stickied threads on the General Board are player centric not Team Centric:

Also out of the teams you listed I don't see the Suns treated the worse or even the same as the Heat. Celtics get a little more coverage for the reason I discussed above. The rest of those teams get discussed in the context of their superstars
