LeBron James - The countdown pt 2. Road to 40,000

Post#1 » by Knightfall » Tue Mar 22, 2022 9:23 am

1402 just looks like a cool number to start from.

But it's also the distance from a all time record being broken. After dropping 38 points tonight, Lebron James is now just 1,402 points away from breaking Kareem Abdul Jabbars record 38,387. As a NBA fan since the 80s this was a number I didn't think anyone would reach. Seen plenty of legends play this game. Some real ones some fugazi's. It's going to be fun watching as this record gets taken down and the events which will happen in the NBA itself in this timespan.

Enjoy and let the countdown officially begin.

1,402. ------> 38,387.

As long as LeBron doesn’t have an injury he should reach it next January or February in 2023

It's too bad Durant started getting hit with so many injuries. I thought he would have been the guy to top Kareem.

I have LeBron playing into his 40s and pushing it to 45K points.

KD and LeBron have identical PPG and KD started later and is always hurt

Yup, to put it in context. The most amount of points Durant ever scored in a season was 2,593. Even if you assume he reached that figure every year for 15 years, which is absurd as there has only been 19 season in NBA history with that many points, he'd only have a 1,910 lead on Lebron.

Listen. Love LeBron, appreciate the moments, enjoy it.
Just leave "the one true" whatever at home. We don't want this thread to be spoiled by the same old fights. They are all true legends, each one has his preferences.
Let's enjoy it please.

As someone said earlier. Barring injury, the record is really in grasp. This is history, enjoy the journey.

imo, 40k is the real milestone. kareem's record is a forgone conclusion even if James gets hit hard with injuries the next few years it's going down at this point. but 40k puts a stamp on it and really gives the next guy something to shoot for. almost like the 4 minute mile. before the 4 minute mile, breaking the record was a nice accomplishment, but the real goal was breaking 4 minutes.

It's pretty remarkable he's still on pace to do it. When he signed with LA it was a virtual lock for him to do it before the end of his Lakers contract. Then he missed 27 games, had a COVID shortened season that cost him 10 (he missed another 5), had another COVID shortened season that cost him ten (he missed another 27), and he's missed 18 games this year. If you count the COVID games against him he's missed more games in LA than he missed his entire 15 years prior to coming there. Any normal athlete would've declined in a big way and it would be a question of whether it could be done or not.

Instead his current pace was so far ahead that he's still a virtual lock to do it. It's wild how he's been making up for missed games with his 2nd highest scoring season ever at 37 too. If you told me LeBron would be banged up for four years I'd guess he'd be averaging 15-18 ppg at this stage...not 30.

Let's just call it 3000 more points to go. Then that way it still sounds like he has a ways to go (which it is) to get to 40000.

1400 just sounds *yawn* meh to me bc I know it is inevitable (even if God forbid he gets injured) because it's like a marathon runner looking down the last quarter mile ...he sees it, he knows he'll still make it, even if he somehow manages to stumble and fall...just crawl your way past the finish line.

..

Look, this season isn't even finished he has 10 games left and has every possibility making 30 pts per game...
He'll be starting next season w only 1100 points to go..he can rack up that many before all star break.

As others have stated, the true milestone is how many more points he will accumulate after passing KAJ. James has to make it harder for the next guy, however generations that will take.

I am going to enjoy the ride and hope he doesn't get injured. It is one thing taking care of your body at 23. It is entirely different the closer you get to 40 (I am 41). Keeping take Centrum and do cryotherapy and acupuncture, lebron.

Im just doing some hypothetical math here..

Let say no major injuries,
Plays approx 65-70 games per season
one example below is
avg points starting w
next season 22-23: 25pts
23-24: 22 pts
24-25: 20 pts
25-26: 17 pts
retires
.
.
.
he can possibly rack up 44,000 + points by the time he retires.

crazy amount of points. no wonder he cheaps out on his phone plan - so he can spend more money on keeping his body in tip top shape everyday.

This record will be broken next season for sure, in Lebron's 20th season.

He's also <6,000 minutes away from breaking KAJ's all-time minutes played record.

That's not very close, would happen in the '24-'25 season.
