Re: State of Cowboys Union?
Yea I saw both of those. It would have been hard for the Cowboys to get the money right. I’m sure he still wants to be a highly paid LB and unfortunately he’s on the wrong side of 30. The Cowboys haven’t been in the habit of give big long term contracts to players in their 30’s for a while.
This leaves the sore open if a guy like Nakobe Dean if he falls to pick 24. The draft should also be deep at LB in the middle rounds where the Cowboys have four 5th round picks.
Za’Darius Smith would have also been a good addition but again, not at that cost. Especially coming off a serious back injury. Rumor is they have an interest in JPP. I’d rather get JPP on a low 1 or 2 year deal than pay what Smith got.

With the way I think this draft will mostly play out, I think the Cowboys will be in perfect position for a very good DT or another LB.

Who do you have your eye on? I think Devin Lloyd will be a top 15 pick. I'm not as high on Nakobe Dean. I think there's a chance he falls into the 2nd. Some good DT's. Jordan Davis will be off the board by then. But if Wyatt is still there then that's a steal.

Either Davonte Watt or Jordan Davis will work for me. I think Ikem Ekwonu from North Carolina State is the best player in the draft but we have no shot at him.

Maybe Jerry will trade up. Grab one of them.
Do you like any of the QB's? McCarthy was spotted at Corral's Pro Day today. Stopped at the Golden Corral on the way.

Hell no. Don't like any of them and I surely don't like the fact McCarthy is evaluating them. I want to replace Prescott but not with any of them.

Re: State of Cowboys Union?
Head coach Mike McCarthy is close with the Schottenheimer family, having worked for Brian’s father Marty for six years when he was with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Guys, this is not a great hire. Remember that playoff game a couple of years ago in Dallas. Yeah, he was our OC at the time.
He has a very old school approach ("Marty Ball") as it's known. Run, run, pass. He still gets jobs based on his last name alone.
I'm sorry.

I’m sure he and Kelvin Moore will make a great team… [/sarcasm]

This probably means Sean Peyton will not coach this year. No way would Sean have this bird brain on his team. This is just another front office and coaching swamp addition. As long as Jerry is still calling the shots and McCarthy is still coaching with Elliott and Prescott on the team, we are going nowhere near an NFC Championship game or Super Bowl. Just another puppet on a string.

I think Sean Payton decided a while back he wasn’t coaching this year.
I do agree though that it’s very likely Sean Payton will not be coaching the Cowboys next year. It’s more likely that Dan Quinn gets the job, especially if the defense has another big jump like that did this season.

That's why I want the Cowboys to go all in on defense in the upcoming draft unless they can find 1 good O-lineman. If we can hit on 2 or 3 pieces in the draft on defense, this group could be special. The offense on the other hand is a lost cause. I do not like the structure and personnel at all on offense. Back to my old ways, defense.

I agree that the Cowboys need more defensive help but are you willing to reach for a lesser player in round 1 (only because he plays defense)?

The offense is going to suck anyway, so yes.

You know that’s how we ended up with Taco Charlton right?

Reaching for a need is never a good idea. The Hawks have certainly been guilty of that in their past. Rashaad Penny & LJ Collier both come to mind. Neither should have been picked in the 1st Round.
I think the Cowboys have done a pretty good job of not reaching. Taco Charlton might be one of the few.

That’s my philosophy. Never reach. Whenever a team reaches they always end up passing on a much better player. It seems like the team that reaches spends the rest of the draft trying to cover that mistake. Just take the best player available regardless of position.

I don't believe we will be reaching at all where we are sitting if we take a DT or LB. I see a bunch of WR's, Cb's, O-lineman and a couple QB's be the primary focus before we pick.

I agree that they are going to be able to get a really good player at 24. My top 5 wish list would be: Kenyon Green, Tyler Linderbaum, Trevor Penning, Zion Johnson, or Treylon Burks. I would be happy with anyone of those 5 guys at pick 24. If all 5 are off the board then that means someone really good has fallen to pick 24. I think the Cowboys are in a great position in this draft.

You bring up some interesting names. I firmly believe that Metcalf will be dealt. The Hawks want more picks & don't want to invest in paying a WR franchise money. I'm hearing that Linderbaum & Johnson are guys that they're hot on. Penning will be off the board by the time Dallas picks.
