Re: The Official Fire Doc Rivers Thread
Per Marc Stein-
"Rivers might have a more significant problem to manage than merely tuning out the naysayers questioning his presence on the Top 15 list. The conspiracy theory already making the rounds in league coaching circles holds that Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey will eventually want Mike D’Antoni to take over in the hot seat for Philadelphia’s new Joel Embiid/James Harden tag team after D’Antoni’s offensive creativity helped catapult Harden to three scoring titles in Houston."

Re: The Official Fire Doc Rivers Thread
I was coming to post that.
Not sure if Stein is just taking a logic leap, or if there are rumblings.
I think these next playoffs are huge trials for Doc and Harris.
Time is ticking now that Harden is here.

I think it's gonna take two flameouts for Doc to get fired.
But now that Morey has the foundation he wanted of Jo and James, everyone else is definitely auditioning to see if they fit.

Yeah, I think Doc will get more than half a season to figure things out. Every player not named Ben Simmons (and maybe Tobi) has made significant improvements to their game during Doc’s tenure and he’s done an incredible job this year keeping the team rolling under tough circumstances.

Doc shouldn't be under that kind of pressure to keep his job. Did Pop ever have that kind of heat? Doc has earned the right not to ever have his job status questioned.

“Nobody can put pressure on me as much as I do” said Doc.
Put Niang on Giannis! Worked!
Put Kork to start the 2nd half of the Bucks game? Worked.
This guy has some balls, I’m surprised I’m the only one to mention it here.

I do believe that Doc is top 5 coach in the league.
- we haven’t been #1 seed since 2001 (Doc did it)
- we haven’t had East coach at ASG since 2001 (Doc did it)
- with all the Simmons drama, we are #3 seed in the East now
- Morey loves Doc (Morey is the smartest)
- we are no longer running all bench lineups.
- Doc makes adjustments like no other in a critical game in RS? Bench your best defensive player? Just wow.
- Doc wants to win. Period.

I've been as critical of Doc as anyone and I'm not quite ready to crown him yet, but he pulled the right strings against MIL, and shockingly at that. Was beyond pleasantly surprised that he started and closed the game with Niang, and keeping Thybulle on the bench to open the 2nd half was a great move.
He still needs to give Reed and Bassey more run, unless he knows a big is coming and is planning for that. I didn't get not sticking Reed on Giannis for at least a short stint just to see if that is a real thing that might be used in a big spot down the road. I need to see the kind of lineup and rotation flexibility he showed the other night in big playoff spots before I'll be a believer.

Re: The Official Fire Doc Rivers Thread
Team A: Run the same play until the defense scouts it and learn how to stop it. And once the defense stop it, you run your next play among your handful of plays.
Team B: Run all your plays and make it hard for the defense to scout it.
Team C: Run your best play and keep running it even when defense learn how to counter it
Im not saying always.
But to understand Doc. Doc is like team A, and it’s something i’ve noticed and confirmed from Zach Lowe’s podcast.
Doc wants a handful of options. He wont run all options in a game. He will use one of them and repeatedly use it if its working and go to the next option when it stops working.
For Team B, once you’re scouted. You don’t have a counter because you’ve used all of them.
For Team C, once you’ve used your best card, you can use other options but its inferior than the first option you’ve used. Think microball Rockets squad
Against bad teams, he’ll try to play less than normal. Maybe it’s good enough that he does not need to even play his normal game. And if bad teams can keep it close, he can kick it another gear and go to his normal game for separation. If not, then go above normal.
If Harden struggles, there’s Maxey.
If Maxey struggles, there’s Shake.
If Thybulle struggles, there’s Green.
If Korkmaz struggles, there’s Joe.
If Tobi struggles, there’s Niang.
If Biid struggles, there’s DeAndre.
If DeAndre struggles, there’s Bassey.
We end games with Thybulle. If Thybulle struggles, then we end the game with Niang and the starters.
That’s how I look at it. That and Doc’s career, is how i convince myself Doc knows what he’s doing.

?????
How can you make your plays "Hard to scout" when you play them constantly?

If you literally have to "convince yourself", isn't that at least suspicious?

Maybe my english is bad. But “convince myself” for me is about how these facts lead me to believe rather than to persuade myself
Then what I mean is..
Lets say you have 10 offensive sets. Other coaches would run one set after another despite whatever result one set would accomplish. By doing so, other teams can see all the 10 sets of doc from one single game.
But for doc, he may just run the same set over and over again if the defense can’t stop it. And if the defense can stop it, then he’d run the next set. Then repeat the process over again.
Like for instance the Bassey situation. I do think it’s much better to have DeAndre-Bassey depth than to have Bassey-Milsap depth.
For the Kork-Joe situation. I do think its much better to continue to give Kork his burn until he gets his rhythm. Rather than have Joe have the PT then if Joe struggles, you would be in a bad place with having to rely on Kork who seems out of rhythm.

We have three potential answers in house in Joerger, Burke, and Cassell. All of them would be massive upgrades, and we'll see Cassell get scooped up by someone and have success like Monty Williams and Udoka have had.
